Patti Smith, Vampire Weekend: Vampire Weekend to release another single, speak for New York Times event

Vampire Weekend's excellent self-titled debut may get overlooked in some year end polls due to its January release date, but the seeming ubiquity of the band, their songs and those ...

Christie’s Auctions Dietzel Tattoo Chest

Christie’s is taunting me by holding their Punk/Rock art auction next week, November 24th, filled with underground goodness like rare Patti Smith poetry books, Nick Cave and Lydia Lunch ‘77 concert flyers, and most important to the tattoo community, the hand-crafted Art Deco-styled chest of Amund Dietzel. Christie’s offers a short Dietzel bio below but you can [...]

On Musical Credability, The Roster and Frankencooper

Personally I would have preferred the INXS take on this ; I firmly believe that no one really likes Dylan, they just say they do because they are supposed to. Same thing goes for Patti Smith. But whatevs, I just love that U.S. Soccer is pop-culturally astute enough to announce the roster for the match v. the 'Guats this way. Oh and uh, yeah...FrankenCooper cometh! Hallelujah!

God Bless Dolly Parton

Sharlet: I recently met an activist and memoirist named Michael Patrick McDonald, who for his second book, Easter Rising , got the only blurb I've ever truly been jealous of. He'd been trying to contact Patti Smith to win permission to quote a line from her amazing "Gloria" -- "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" in his memoir of punk and South Boston...

Patti Smith: Dream of Life

Seen tonight at the Detroit Film Theater. It's a strange and restless film. Beyond collage storytelling, "Dream of Life" is downright moody and whimsical. But it's also extraordinarily evocative. I left the theater and was walking back to my apartment--damp...

Rock 'n' roll fling

People want a saint but with a cowboy mouth. Or so Cavale tells Slim in "Cowboy Mouth," a 1971 play written by Sam Shepard and his then-lover, musician Patti Smith. The play, produced by SCRAP Productions and opening today at the Box Performance Space at 1025 Lomas Blvd.

The heart has got to open in a fundamental way

In the lead up to the election and the days following, I've had two songs in my head: Patti Smith "People have the Power" and Leonard Cohen "Democracy." I spent two afternoons a week canvassing for Barack the past month, and I've become emotionally invested in an election and a single candidate (a mere human being! a politician!) in a way I haven't ever before. Those two songs have brought me to the...

Hot Tickets: Patti Smith, Frightened Rabbit, Firebird Suite

If you haven’t yet made plans for New Year’s Eve (and you don’t already have My Morning Jacket tickets for their Madison Square Garden show ), you might want to consider Ms. Patti Smith for your evening’s festivities. While Smith doesn’t exactly have a new studio album to promote, she’s certainly been in the headlines this year. July saw the release of The Coral Sea —a live rendering...
