(From A Most Peculiar Weekend , 1966, with Laurence Olivier and Vanessa Redgrave) Sit On It (1948) Danny Kaye does, on coffins, cattle, traffic cones, heaping plates of pasta, moose antlers, and June Allyson, for the better part of 88 minutes. When I was growing up in Tulsa in the early 1970's, I remember the competition between the perennial AM radio enemies (at least to me) KAKC and KELI. I always liked KAKC, until the sixth grade, when I had a crush on a girl at church named Kelly, and then my favorite became KELI for a while. My older brother and I couldn't wait to hear Casey Kasem's American Top Forty show. We would listen to the entire...

“BABY, BABY, DON’T GET HOOKED ON PTSD” Ah–who can ever forget the ’70’s song stylings of Mac Davis? But if you figure out how, let me know. I’m kidding, I’m kidding, Mac. Sorta’. Yesterday: UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE) GEN. CONE: I think General Casey, as you’ve heard him talk, has taken this on directly. And we are going to take [...]
Hooks are big sellers. Coat hooks, hat hooks, key hooks. You know those hooks made out of old doorknobs? Personally, I’m tired of looking at them, but people love them. Can’t make ‘em fast enough. I’ve been working like a mad woman, even cutting my bathroom breaks short. And yet, I still don’t have enough inventory [...]
Okay, okay. In response to this post , my in-box is full of angry brickbats from readers who liked the made-for-tv Shining movie. Apparently, King hated the Kubrick version -- which I think was one of the few Kubrick movies that wasn't overrated! -- and he, and quite a few King fans, think the miniseries was a more faithful adaptation of the book. Noted. Perhaps my curmudgeonly attitude is attributable...
Earlier this year, my friend Al in Milwaukee sent up a blast from the past — an old end-of-year music roundup from the FM station we listened to in central Wisconsin in the ’70s. Most interesting about WIFC’s Top 95 Heavys of 1972 was what was tacked onto the end — a list of the 30 [...]
The trend of pop stars hosting TV variety shows didn’t really start with Sonny and Cher, but theirs was the first to become a Top-10 Nielsen hit. The duo’s 1971 summer replacement series, which took over the time slot of The Ed Sullivan Show after it left the air, was so successful that it led [...]
Verse Thirty-Nine The masters of old attained unity with the Tao. Heaven attained unity and became pure. The earth attained unity and found peace. The spirits attained unity so they could minister. The valleys attained unity that they might be full. Humanity attained unity that they might flourish. Their leaders attained unity that they might set the example. This is the power of unity. Without unity,...
WAUKESHA, Wis., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A former surgeon with a history of drug abuse has been sentenced to 30 years in a Wisconsin prison for a crash that killed a pregnant woman and her daughter. Mark Benson, 56, said in a brief statement he was solely responsible for taking the lives of Jennifer Bukosky, 39, a school administrator and teacher, her daughter Courtney, 10, and the mother's unborn child,...
There's a good chance that Mark Benson will die in prison. From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel : Former surgeon Mark M. Benson was handed a sentence Monday that will keep him in prison until he is just shy of his 87th birthday. It appears to be one of the stiffest sentences handed down in the state for a conviction of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. Waukesha Circuit Court Judge J. Mac Davis...
Since he claimed to be sorry, I would have knocked the three years off his 53 year max, but I guess this is as much as we could expect from todays criminal (in)justice system. Benson sentenced to 30 years in prison Mark M. Benson was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Monday by Judge J. [...]
In a handwritten letter to Judge J. Mac Davis, Mark M. Benson says he is solely responsible for the crash that killed popular teacher and Associate Principal Jennifer Bukosky of Oconomowoc High School, her unborn child and her 10-year-old daughter and injured two other children.
The attorney for Mark M. Benson is asking a judge to impose a sentence that would put Benson in prison for 10 to 20 years, much less than the maximum five decades the former physician is facing.
