That scruffy troubadour in the Omaha studio with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes/Saddle Creek) isn't Jim Morrison in the Paris years , nor is it Jesus, we don't think. That is one Pete Yorn back recording new music. The formidable Frank Black of the Pixies has also been joining him in recent months for "new explorations in music," and all the results are expected in the form of an album rumored to...

Two of my favourite song writers have revealed themselves as astronomy nerds in love songs. Frank Black in "Sir Rockaby" (1994): How many stars girl Can you both count And then classify? I'm standing here in this big swirl Singing this lullaby Robert Schneider of the Apples in Stereo in "7 Stars" (2007): Seven stars in the sky You're feeling sociable Silver stars in your eyes You feel emotional And...

As some of you are aware, the unkempt individual in the photograph above is a friend of mine. Over the last few months Pete has been working on his next release, tentatively titled American Blues, in both Salem, Oregon, and Omaha, Nebraska, where he is currently in the midst of finishing up. This morning he [...]

Mark Jacobs of Mythic, as seen on G4, remembering the little people: As spotted by J. J. thinks he’s going for a Frank Black look: But I’m thinking it’s more of a 80’s super producer thing. I guess we’ll know if when you sack the Inevitable City, that creepy girl from the “Close to the Edit” video comes [...]

Combining shoegaze and dreampop with straight-ahead power pop, Washington D.C. indie-rock darlings Unrest were the brainchild of Mark Robinson, founder of the TeenBeat label. After a few post-punk experimental years, Unrest tamed their sound a bit (with plenty of more unorthodox tracks here and there) and snagged a distribution deal with famed 4AD Records, which [...]

Staying with the archive theme for another post, how about this splendid Pixies parody by Chris Morris? It’s called ‘Motherbanger’ and successfully apes the sound of the Pixies while making Frank Black sing about an incestuous relationship with his mother and the resulting necrophilia. The shouting is perfect Frank Black, the bass is Kim Deal [...]

Balboa Park is an amazing place. Near downtown it is a huge green space dotted with at least twenty museums. We could never have seen all the different exhibits if we'd spent a week there. All the buildings had a very European feel with tiled mosaics and orante balconies. We did make it to the San Diego Museum of Art where we saw an exhibit of Georgia O'Keef's work and Eleanor Antin.
