Weekly Earful: The Eighties Almost Killed Them

By: David SchultzThe Eighties proved to be an awkward era. Not only did it give us the Safety dance, purple rain, luftballons, the moonwalk, Wang Chung and Terence Trent D’Arby, it’s the decade that gave us the phrase “Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto.” In addition to cringeworthy fashion statements like suits with pastel-colored T-shirts and teased, feathered hair for both men and...

Video: Dirty Projectors – “No Intention”

Any Dirty Projectors fans out there? I admit I’m a bit late to the party on these guys, mainly because I initially wasn’t digging the lead vocals by Dave Longstreth (not the ladies, they’re fantastic). But I really like the lead guitar lines as well as the minimal sonic backdrop these guys/gals put together. This [...] Related posts: Dirty Projectors & No Kids | Subterranean,...

Blue Sky

Decided on this one for the day before Halloween, since it's suitably Halloweenish that fans keep stealing Duane Allman's gravestone. It's as if he were some medieval saint or something. But anyone who can play guitar like this ? I guess I sorta understand why they steal it, because this brand of effortless playing manifests only a few times every generation. But I hope they realize, his greatness...

Alabama Soul

Sorry sorry..just had to upload this. I guess you know the history of how Eric Clapton had heard of Duane....Anyways it was this rockin' guitar solo at the end of Picketts cover of "Hey Jude" that first impressed good ol' EC so much. This was just one of the amazing Muscle Shoals recordings at Fame studios. The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section , also known as The Swampers was the band. TRACKS...

Video: Remembering Duane Allman

Duane Allman died 38 years ago today. I thought we’d post a few videos in remembrance: 1970 Allman brothers Duane on guitar [YouTube] The Allman Brothers Band with Duane – Dreams – Fillmore East – 09/23/1970 [YouTube] …and still one of my favorites because his guitar-playing during the song’s outro: Derek & The Dominos – Layla (Studio Version) [YouTube]...

Remembering Duane Allman

Duane Allman slammed his foot down on the kick-start of his Harley Davidson Sportster motorcycle on an autumn evening 38 years ago today in Macon, Georgia. A few miles down the road, he clipped the rear end of a flatbed truck, sustaining fatal injuries. The lead guitarist of the Allman Brothers Band, who was gaining [...]

The 70s: Bring Out Your Dead, Part I

Some of those who died in the early 1970s but still reverberate: Jimi Hendrix (11/27/1942-9/19/1970). We haven't see nor heard anything quite like him since, have we? Playing guitar or otherwise. Janis Joplin (1/19/1943-10/4/1970). Ditto Hendrix for her. Of women, the only singer I can think of who seems as intense, since Joplin's death, is Amy Winehouse . Charles "Sonny" Liston (ca.5/8/1932-12/30/1970)....
