There was an interesting article in yesterday's Wall Street Journal about Tom Petty: Rock God Or Mere Mortal? "As Tom Petty prepares to release a career-spanning anthology next week, an attempt to determine where he falls in the music pantheon." The basic premise is that though he sold a lot of records, maybe because he was prolific with the pop hook, he just seems to lack the "cool"...
A marvelous song, first sung by a marvelous singer and slide guitar player, Bonnie Raitt, on a marvelous album, Luck of the Draw , in 1991, then marvelously covered by another marvelous talent, George Michael, on another marvelous album, Ladies and Gentlemen: The Very Best of George Michael , 1998. I suppose I could run on and on with this. Written by two (obviously) marvelous song writers, Mike Reid...

This is the bit where George Bailey has come to his enemy, the evil banker Potter, to beg for a loan - and when Potter finds that George has a $500 life-insurance policy he tells him: "Why, you're worth more dead than alive!" (Although I very much doubt that the insurance company would've paid out if Clarence the angel hadn't intervened in George's subsequent suicide attempt.) From It's A...
I've always liked the Christmas song Merry Christmas Baby. The first version that I ever heard was the blues singer Charles Brown's version. According to Wikipedia; "Merry Christmas, Baby" is an R & B Christmas standard written by Lou Baxter and Johnny Moore. It has been covered by many artists including Otis Redding, B.B. King and Chuck Berry. Perhaps the most notable cover of this song...
In his Ash Grove recording, guitarist Dave Alvin laments the loss of a favorite Los Angeles club, a venue that should be on the National Register of Historic Places. It would have to be in an urn, however, the club burned not once, but three times. Ed Pearl (an uncle of Spirit's Randy California) founded the 250-seat Ash Grove in 1958.
