Music: Review:The Shazam: Meteor

After spending most of the ’90s failing to bull their way out of the local scene, Nashville power-pop foursome The Shazam developed some real momentum at the start of the ’00s, drawing international attention with the booming, crazily catchy albums Godspeed The Shazam and Tomorrow The World . And then… silence. Prior to the new album Meteor , The Shazam hadn’t released any...

Orba Squara

"The Trouble With Flying" from the album The Trouble With Flying 2009 iTunes Orba Squara, which is basically New York-based musician Mitch Davis, is one of those musical acts who is hard to hate. Even if one is not a fan of bouncy uplifting pop songs which is Davis' forte, one can’t ignore the fact he is a talented musician. On his past recordings, Davis has played numerous instruments...

ABC Music Humpday Videos - "B" is for Billy Squier

From his 1981 album, "Dont Say No", which spawned the hugely popular "The Stroke". Sorry this isn't an actual video, but more of a Billy Squier slideshow set to this song. This is one of my favorite Billy Squier songs. I was in 7th grade. I was into the Police, Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard and AC/DC. The radio stations (KGB FM 101.5 and KPRI 106.5) had this song on heavy rotation...

Video killed the radio star....

So, one of the dubious benefits of US radio is the endless recycling of soft '80s metal. I pricked up my ears one track came on (which I'll put in the comments), because it sounded exactly like Robert Plant. However, it turned out to be by one Billy Squier, of whom I've never heard. Apparently a moderately successful career was killed by one video, and this is it. What were all involved thinking?...

Tonight in Music: Art Brut, Mickey Avalon, and More

From Up & Coming : Art Brut, Princeton (Neumos) At this point in Art Brut's career, with three solid-to-stupendous albums under their belts, you've probably already made your mind up about the band's brand of winking, winning, hyperenthusiastic pop rock 'n' roll. But just in case you haven't, a crash course: Their debut, Bang Bang Rock & Roll, is as explosive a mission statement ("Formed...

Mickey Avalon Goes Big With Travis Barker, Dr. Luke On Second Album

It's been a long time since Mickey Avalon was passing out demos at Hollywood nightclubs and scrambling to secure a deal with MySpace Records. If you slept on his self-titled 2006 debut — an insanely profane, gutter-hugging punk rap manifesto featuring the classics "Jane Fonda" and "So Rich, So Pretty" — might I suggest you [...]

That’s The Trouble With Flying Up

Here’s a delightfully synchronized video for Orba Squara’s title track from their new album, The Trouble with Flying, featuring guest vocals from Billy Squier. A cross country photographic journey, it’s woven from thousands of photos taken on their bus tour from NYC to Portland. On a side note, I love how the video has this [...]
