There are many myths surrounding hair loss including the one about wearing hats. But it seems head-gear of another kind, the turban, does actually lead to hair loss. The Farjo Medical Centre has reported that a growing number of its patients now come from the male Sikh community. Men as young as 20 years old [...]

From The Spice Islands Voyage : The Quest for Alfred Wallace, the Man Who Shared Darwin's Discovery of Evolution, by Tim Severin (Carroll & Graf, 1997), pp. 183-185: The volcanic island of Ternate , where Wallace first stepped ashore in January 1858, was at that time nominally ruled by an eccentric one-eyed Sultan . An octogenarian, he liked to be addressed by his full title of Tadjoel Moelki Amiroedin...

Brender (Again) 1. Dark Helmet's conversion to Sikh did not facilitate the capture of Princess Vespa. 2. "Welcome to 7-11, would you like to try a Slurpee?" 3. Perhaps the one instance in which the caption "Mom" just will not work. On the other hand, his laxative is apparently starting to kick in, and Army of Mom does own that outfit. 4. The Najul house was the only one in the neighborhood...

When I first arrived in Kabul back in early September, a big tree at the guest house garden was full of fragant figs that ripened in the intense afternoon sun. Now, it's mid-October, and that tree is devoid of fruid. The nights are cold, and the afternoon warmth seems to weaken with each passing day. Yet, still, there is no resolution to the Aug. 20 election to pick a new president.

"To the people responsible for today's tragedy, I say this: Are you fucking kidding me? Are the turbans on your heads wrapped too tight? Have you gone too long without a bath? Do you not know who you are fucking with? Americans are so hungry to kill, that we shoot at each other every day. We will relish that opportunity for new targets for our aggression. Have you forgotten history? What happened...

An older man said today that he will not vote in the upcoming elections. Naturally I asked doesn't he want things to change? He said of course, but the only change coming is the turbans. I said not if people like us go out and vote. He said that I don't get the reality of Iraq. I asked the man to explain, and he did with enthusiasm: Because of Saddam Hussein, 90 percent of Iraqis are uneducated. The...

By STEVEN LEE MYERS New York Times BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki announced the formation of a broad political coalition on Thursday, setting the stage for a parliamentary election campaign dominated by rival blocs claiming to appeal across Iraq’s sectarian and ethnic divides. Mr. Maliki, a Shiite seeking a second term, assembled an array of political figures and tribal leaders...

There was something different in the air. There was a buzz . I looked at the crowd. The place thronged with people, and still they kept coming in. Tonight, I thought, we would break the occupancy limit for sure! The leaders of the crowd were there. Was it my imagination or was their clothes freshly ironed, cleaned for a special occasion? Did the tunic look new? The turbans looked freshly unwrapped....

Here's something you probably don't know about me: I (or I used to) collect vintage magazines from the 40's-60's. Most are movie magazines as I am a huge classic film buff (if you couldn't already tell from my VERTIGO post, previous) but I have some classic Vogues and Life magazine's thrown in the mix as well. The other day I was going through one of my storage boxes and came across a stack of them....

Inquiring reader, in honor of this week’s tepid heat wave in Richmond, I continue my coverage of all things seaside during the Regency era. To our moderns eyes, Regency fashions by the seashore covered as much of the body as ordinary clothes, and were as complicated as regular fashions. Let’s take a closer look. I question [...]
