Fans of inventive, literate rock & roll shed a little tear when Rats and People called it quits last year. By combining British folk- and indie-rock traditions, the band cut a path between the Dead Milkmen and the Decemberists and left the excellent album The City of Passersby in it...
O Lord our God, you call whom you will and send them where you choose: We thank you for sending your servant Willibrord to be an apostle to the Low Countries, to turn them from the worship of idols to serve you, the living God; and we entreat you to preserve us from the temptation to exchange the perfect freedom of your service for servitude to false gods and to idols of our own devising; through Jesus...
Every so often you come upon an artist that is nearly as preoccupied with telling stories as they are making beautiful music. Musicians like John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats and Leonard Cohen are often charged with this, of striking that heartbreaking balance between the pen and the guitar. I think it is refreshing when songs are not always anonymous or general, but instead about something you...
Punk Rock Music New York - The Ramones, the most influential rock band since The Beatles, hailed from Queens. But if that isn't enough, consider the hardcore scene and bands like H2O, Sick Of It All, Cro-Mags, CIV, Gorilla Biscuits, Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law and many more. Philly - Philly band The Loved Ones are in high rotation on my playlist right now. The Dead Milkmen were pretty cool. And the...
I miss X96 and boner awards. In homage to the X96 boner awards, I would like to nominate and award the mayor of Stockton Utah with the Green Jello Boner. Officer Josh Rowell , who paid his own way through Utah Police Officer training, was running a DUI checkpoint last Tuesday night when he noticed a car appeared to try and evade his checkpoint. He tracked the car down pulled the driver over and ticketed...
Of course it would take a fab party, thrown by the BrewDog guys, to get me to break my long silence. Some of the blogoshire has been discussing the Equity for Punks proposal, the most recent business development strategy from my favourite UK brewery. Basically, you can own a small share of the brewery for [...]
[10-07-2009] [PART 1 - PART 2 - PART 3 - PART 4] Commemorating the riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention for the fifth year in a row, Riot Fest 2009 leaned heavily on Chicago heritage acts (or “nostalgia” for those less charitably minded). The four-day, multi-venue punk extravaganza included some of the heaviest hitters to emerge from Chicago's hardcore scene in the ‘80s and ‘90s...
Bad Brains @ Irving Plaza in 2008 (more by Tim Griffin) "VICE magazine, which is still not only fully independent but is also flourishing while the dinosaurs that surround us slowly suffocate in the tar pits of their financial ruin,...
I watched Adventureland last night. The director's previous work, Superbad, was a bawdy comedy. This one is a much more low key story of awkward young love at a theme park, peppered with comedic sets by the likes of Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig. It is certainly worth your time. The movie is set in 1987. The most notable nod to the 80s is the heavy use of 80s tunes. The theme park workers are tormented...
The Dead Milkmen have skewered just about everything, taking punk’s sneer and adding heavy doses of caustic, irreverent humor and witty lyricism, often producing hilarious results. ... (Like this story? Click the headline to vote it up on WindyCitizen.com)
I grew up watching 120 Minutes, an MTV show that aired starting at midnight on Sunday night. This made waking up for school on Monday morning hard, but at least I got to catch the newest “alternative” videos (The Cure, The Replacements, The Breeders, that sort of thing) which rarely aired in the normal [...]
KEXP counted down 100 of the Best Debut Albums of all time voted by you, the listeners, yesterday. And, I can’t believe I’m actually able to say that the number one record was not Nirvana’s Bleach or any “grunge” album for that matter. Arcade Fire’s Funeral took first place, just stealing the spot from Seattle’s [...]
