Just a quick blog to mention this guy, Siebe Thiessen aka the sometime Dr Auratheft. He's a Dutch guy who specialises in doing mixes and podcasts of different world musics - from Tamil Hip Hop to Kuduro and Mento. Not everything is up for archive on his blog, which is a real shame; there are a couple of great mixes that I've lost over the years and wouldn't mind again (must email him at some point)...

At about the 9:45 mark, after a Q&A with Radio 1's Gilles Peterson, "Love Cry"'s Joy Orbison remix, Kieran's spittle, and a Sun Ra moment, you'll find There Is Love In You 's "Plastic People." Get a load of the crystalline downcast shakers at Domino .

Another high-end recommendation. We all know the book is a joy to behold on the eyes, and now the double CD or double/double lp combo is out to please the ears. All killer, no filler as certain parties might say. Check out the super rare Sun-Ra joint in the comments. "In 1982, Ra offered his Nuclear War, a twisted mix of swing era jazz and rap to Columbia records. The profanity, it's a motherfucker,...

Heavy. Heavy. Heavy. Hailing from Melbourne, renowned label Knowfool dims the lights and adverts your eyes to the pit. Ladies and gentlemen… and ants, I present to you The Raah Project. This soulful duo has taken the stage with pining lyricism and dramatically orchestrated numbers. Never mind the intermissions and popcorn, their debut album, Score, is [...]

The idea of the “drummer as bandleader” is an oddity in most circles.

OK, help me out here. Has it been suggested before? If not: What are the categories? (fame & influence/(un)listenability/secret weapon i.e. work/idea of note)? Who would be the top scoring cards? Could you have, say, Stockhausen in it or if you did would you have to have the whole academy...

(In the "trying to catch up posting about events" category) A couple of weeks ago maegwynn and I were out to dinner in Durham and I noticed a flyer: Having the midday free the next day I went and sat in. Eleven people attended, which I considered pretty good for a midday event with limited publicity. Attendees ranged from literature professors at one or another university embedded deeply...

In its 27 years, the London-based music magazine The Wire —whose function has been to treat German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, astral-jazz shaman Sun Ra, and dubstep pioneer Kode9 as pop stars—has found an enviable niche as one of the few newsstand titles in its league continuing to thrive as more mainstream-minded titles go belly-up. Besides catering to a hard core of music lovers...
