Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of a Vocal Virtuosa

I have been trying to develop a diverse library of children's books. One of the areas that is still pretty thin is music. When I saw Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of a Vocal Virtuosa , written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Brian Pinkney, I picked it up and flipped through it. I think it is a very fun book with a clever "format"... Although it is a picture book (recommended for children 5-9...

The Passion: One Good Reason

In a world where every singer struggles with the ghost of Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald, it is a rare and refreshing treat to hear a vocalist who can genuinely be said to have their own voice. Considering that this album features three such singers, One Good Reason is a truly special recording. The line-up comprises three of the finest vocal talents in Britain: Sara Colman, finalist in the BBC Radio...

Video: Chrisette Michelle Live - ” If I Have My Way”

Ms. Michelle is in my opinion one of the most talented vocalists to come along in years. Her sound is reminiscent of Sarah Vaughn or or Ella Fitzgerald. It’s sad that there arent more venues to showcase her talent here in the U.S.

Ella: the inner beauty

The BBC (BBC 2) showed an excellent documentary about Ella Fitzgerald last night. I didn’t know the full extent of the abuse and neglect she suffered as a child and adolescent: but it confirmed what I’d always thought, and have previously written about, here. But I prefer to remember this lovely woman at her happiest and swingin’est:

Music Review | Leny Andrade: Summoning the Woman From Ipanema, at Last

To describe Leny Andrade as both the Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald of bossa nova only goes so far in evoking a performer whose voice seems to contain the body and soul of Brazil.

Rock Band 2 Getting A Variety Of Full Album Choices

Entertainment Weekly has gotten the scoop on six full albums that will be making their way onto Rock Band 2 via DLC. It's a nice variety of bands, but none of them suits my tastes particularly. But then again I seriously doubt Billie Holiday's Lady In Satin or Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Song Book are going to be appearing any time soon. I suppose I'll have to wait for " Grandma Music Hero...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BEN'S CHILI BOWL

It was the summer of 1958. Eisenhower was president. Federal troops were ordered into Little Rock to integrate public schools. Explorer I was launched, as was NASA. The first-ever Grammy Awards were given, and Ella Fitzgerald won two of them. 1958 was the year Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. published his first book, Stride Towards Freedom. Griffith Stadium was home to the Washington Senators. 30% of DC’s...
