Tommy Flanagan plays Rain Check in Cologne in 1991. For about two decades until his death a few years ago, Flanagan had a trio with bassist George Mraz (whose nickname was “Bounce” because that’s what a bad Czech does) and a succession of drummers, most more poised than Bobby Durham is here, frankly. Hearing Tommy [...]
You mentioned Guy Lafitte - Well, in my Army days, I was stationed near Bordeaux for two years as a Medic, and got to be friends with a young trumpeter/university student named Jean-George Bulcourt, whose band sometimes played at the base enlisted men's club. He made it possible for me to join a wonderful jazz club, "Le Bahut", situated in a basement which had been a 13th century wine cellar...
To say that Ben Neill plays the trumpet--the instrument of such jazz legends as Miles Davis and Clifford Brown--is an epic understatement. "I think electronica is like a new form of jazz--it's an instrumental form of music that plays out in popular culture but has musical ideas that go beyond the expectations of pop music," says Neill, a student of the electro-acoustic innovations of Robert...
The television comic Soupy Sales loved jazz, knew its history and many of its leading players. Early in his career, when he had a local show in Detroit, he frequently presented jazz stars as guests. After Sales died on October 22 at the age of 83, many obituaries mentioned that the only known video of Clifford Brown performing is from a kinescope recording of the Sales show. For decades, it was assumed...

Of course, Soupy is most remembered today for his famous kids' show that was watched just about as much by adults for it double-layered humor. I was one of its kid-age fans. Two bits from it will always be remembered in the annals of kid-showdom and live television. The first is recounted in every obituary : To kill a minute of extra time he ad libbed by telling the kids to send to him "all those...
Up until 1952, Jimmy Heath's instrument was the alto saxophone. A fast study, Jimmy sounded almost identical to Charlie Parker, earning him the nickname "Little Bird." But the novelty of mimicking Parker soon wore thin, especially as the tenor saxophone emerged in the early 1950s as the more popular reed instrument. So Jimmy made the switch, and in 1953 began recording a series of important...
Curtis Stigers (vcl/ten), Scrapper Sneider (tpt), Mathew Fries (pno), Cliff Schmidtt (bs), Keith Hall (dms). This was a well attended gig. The Sage wasn't sold out but there were enough punters to fill the average jazz club for six months maybe a year. Having said that, it wasn't a jazz audience - it was a comfortable, middle class, stockbroker belt, crowd with not quite enough G and T's in the system...
This week we feature jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown and Rio Samba-ista Ana Costa, plus nine versions of Benny Golson's classic composition, "I Remember Clifford," featuring Art Blakey, George Cables, Ernestine Anderson, Don Byas & Bud Powell, The Modern Jazz Quartet, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Kalamu ya Salaam and Slide Hampton. R.I.P. Brownie.
I was finally able to scan my Sonny Rollins Inquirer feature from the other day, a nice front-page spread [pdf] in the Tuesday Magazine section. I'm not sure if Sonny has elsewhere discussed the possibility of a trio studio session with Christian McBride and Roy Haynes, so I won't claim it's a scoop, but let's hope he goes that way. I was also happy with the Philly-specific anecdotes that turned up...
