Fricke’s Picks: The Folk-Rock Theatre of Johnny Flynn

Johnny Flynn is a South African-born, U.K.-raised singer-songwriter in his mid-20s who makes a British folk rock that sounds almost twice as old as he is. The buoyant, spindly blend of fiddles, fingerpicking, soft-brass fanfares and pub-choir harmonies on Flynn’s marvelous American debut, A Larum (Lost Highway), made with his band the Sussex Wit, is [...]

Silver Summit - Silver Summit

Brooklyn outfit Silver Summit just dropped its self-titled debut on psych-folk imprint Language of Stone, and its revenant, deep sound is right at home there. Sondra Ow Sun-Odeon sings as if reading ancient chants straight out of the Cosmonomicon, while Shawn Bosler’s array of guitars wrap her in darkly patterned blankets. If the duo’s sound [...]

Pete Greenwood - Sirens (Heavenly)

Pete Greenwood - Sirens (Heavenly) THE next new thing is the old thing. For Pete Greenwood's style is drawn from a legendary list of guitar-picking singer-songwriters - Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Bert Jansch and perhaps a glimmer of early Paul Simon. But Sirens is fresh and very much its own sound, despite the obvious hallmarks.Greenwood's guitar-playing is mesmeric, weaving slightly dark harmonies, his...

Well, probably a lot richer but with a lot less music to listen to... Inspired by a couple of shouts from Stuart Cobley on Saturday night, I enjoyed the sounds of UK and The Guess Who...

More fingerstyle DIY stuff for you all

I was experimenting with Open D tuning, which is a favorite of such players as John Fahey, Bert Jansch, Phosphorescent, Bon Iver and others. The tuning is DADF#AD and Capo is on the 4th fret ( for all you players who want to know). I plan to add on this when i get the chance with maybe asking someone to add Dobro and Piano while I lay vocals over the track. Have a listen and let me know what you think.....
