The greatest holiday film ever made was not Jimmy Stewart's It's A Wonderful Life, from 1946, but the 1955 black comedy We're No Angels. Its three stars--Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray--play escaped convicts from Devil's Island who hide out in the home of a naive family running a local haberdashery. The trio set out to rob the family, but end up defending them against their evil and wealthy...

If we were like angels, blameless and freely able to exercise perfect self-control, we would not need rules or regulations. Why, then, do we have so many laws and statutes? Because of man’s wickedness, for he is constantly overflowing with evil; this is why a remedy is required. . . .

Rashmi Bansal has a story in JAM about how this brand new institution under the IIM banner is being undermined from the top. The troubles appear to start almost right from the appointment of a non-academic as Director. [ Aside: Just the other day, I linked to the first chapter ( pdf ) of Amanda Goodall's Socrates in the Boardroom : Why Research Universities Should be Led by Top Scholars . While academics...

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the handbook, it's 95% stats with a little commentary thrown in. Earlier, I posted what the handbook had projected for the 2010 Angels, but here are a few other things I found interesting:...

Last night was of course Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night, or Fireworks Night. It's Guy Fawkes Night to me though as it is all about Guy Fawkes. In my youth (the 1970's) we kids/teenagers used to build giant bonfires in the week building up to Guy Fawkes Night. We would go around people's houses knocking the doors and asking them if they had anything for the bonfire and they'd always give us old...

The dire forces of Aosoth are clearly not the type to shake your hand and parlay; their chosen form of communication is to cut your throat, chug a sanguine sampling, and then offer you forth as some demonic sacrifice. One of France's more grinding, venomous exports, they offer nothing but cruel, Satanic inspired hostility. Far more Arkhon Infaustus than Peste Noire , they just hammer the piss out of...

This is why the Yankees gave $161 million to CC Sabathia. His dominant outing in New York's 10-1 thrashing of the Angels puts the Bombers on the verge of the World Series and CC in Yankees' lore, Scott Miller says.

I hate posting this, I really do. An Angels blog — acting in the typical Angels fan manner of, “everyone else is cheating except the Angels, and the Angels always get screwed more than other teams” — claimed it was “pretty conclusive” that Mariano Rivera spit on a baseball. Never mind that it was right [...] Post from: River Ave. Blues A New York Yankees blog A non-story...

In my post about last night's playoff game between the Yankees and Angels, I referred to the latter team as the California Angels. What a gaffe! As many readers have reminded me, this team became the Anaheim Angels years ago and now is officially known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. It should be obvious that I'm not a true fan of modern baseball. I more or less tuned it out after the 1994 strike....

The legislative department is everywhere extending the sphere of its activity and drawing all power into its impetuous vortex. Federalist No. 48 [8] If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies...
