Recorded and issued only in Europe in 1977, Lost in the Blues (originally known as Troubles, Troubles) consists of nonoriginals that are laden with vocals of almost paralyzing pain, tension, and bereavement (the exceptions are two Jimmy Reed numbers, with Rush's anodyne singing no better than push-button entertainment). Rush's trio is augmented on this 1990 CD reissue by the harmless yet also controvertible...

To evaluate almost a century of blues recordings and narrow it down to thirty albums takes much thought. First and foremost, you must include recordings that were important for their wide influence. Early Delta musicians like Charlie Patton and Son House influenced Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, respectively, who themselves started in the Delta and [...]

In the case of Otis Rush, like many other bluesmen, Mississippi's loss was Chicago's gain. Otis was really instrumental in defining the prototypical Chicago Blues sound. I first got hip to Otis through a searing version on John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers' "Beano" album, with the newcomer Eric Clapton on guitar. Let's watch Otis do "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)": Mayall's still doing this

The Canadian guitarist's fifth album for the Cordova Bay label, and seventh overall, shows David Gogo at the peak of his soul, blues-rock powers. Certainly the only musician in his genre to cover Depeche Mode (a gutsy "Personal Jesus"), Otis Rush (his version of Bloomfield/Butterfield's "Reap What You Sow" nearly cuts the original), Stevie Wonder (a roughed up, bluesy and slowed down "Signed, Sealed,...

Who knows where these live tracks were done, or when? If the sound wasn't so bad, they'd rate with his better concert efforts. It also includes latter-day Little Walter sides which are less inspired. ~ Bill Dahl, All Music Guide Listen to Otis on his cover of James Brown's "I Feel Good" and although the vocal line sounds similar, he and his guitar have made it his own song. Even without the Godfather's...

I'd like you to listen to Otis Rush's "Double Trouble" whilst reading. Now, get some bourbon, draw the shades, and let your computer screen light your room. Ready? Okay. The last train for the night, the 2:08 AM to Philadelphia, just left the station. It's pulling out into the no-man's land of tobacco fields and moonlit wilderness, on its way to salvation. Hound dogs make leashes go taut in the hard-bred...

Inconsistent but sometimes riveting 1975 studio set that hits some high highs (a crunchy "Cut You a Loose," the lickety-split jazzy instrumental "Motoring Along") right alongside some incredibly indulgent moments. But that's Otis — the transcendent instants are worth the hassle. ---by Bill Dahl ------------- 1. Cut You A-Loose (3:43) 2. You're Breaking My Heart (8:34) 3. Midnight Special (4:58) 4....
