In Defense of Self-Promotion, Part 3: A guest post by Ken Waldman

Two weeks ago, in my first post , I mentioned that in 1996 I attended a conference where I met John Crawford, of West End Press, which started a process that led him four years later to publish my first full-length collection, Nome Poems . I also mentioned that prior to that meeting, I'd self-published a chapbook that included some of the poems which later appeared in that book. Though I'd taken the...

For the Sake of the Light: New and Selected Poems. Tom Sexton

For the Sake of the Light: New and Selected Poems. Tom Sexton. (University of Alaska Press PO BOX 756240) $23. I reviewed a previous collection from Tom sexton (Clock With No Hands), a poetry collection that dealt with his childhood in Lowell, Mass. Well Sexton is not only a topnotch urban poet, but he is an accomplished nature poet as well. And if you look at a dramatic sky, and see it as only

This month's 49 Writers featured author John Morgan admits to being "seduced by iambics" while exploring the "cheater sonnet." Maybe we should coin a phrase: Alaskan sonnet? Which books were among the first you published? What niche...

Straley poem celebrates the erotic joy of real books

I've become even more of a pest to friends recently by wagging a copy of John Straley's poetry collection "The Rising and the Rain" (University of Alaska Press, 2008) in front of them and reciting selections that have caught my fancy. One poem, "the erotic life of books," luxuriates in the sensations of perusing real books in a library.
