Luxury Living by the Sea

Filed under: Decor A really great, oversized design book with beautifully-reproduced images can sometimes actually transport you to another place. Such is the case with a new volume titled New Seaside Interiors , edited by Angelika Taschen, which is anything but a mishmash of coastal clichés. Forget what you think you know about nautical décor; with examples of brilliant seaside design on all five...

Taschen maps calendar

Not sure why I've never written about this before, as it's one of my favorite things in my bedroom. I got this ancient maps calendar at my favorite bookstore, Spoonbill & Sugartown . It's a small book shop that carries literature, handmade cards and postcards, artsy magazines, a huge collection of Moleskines and lots of design-related books. They definitely have a specific aesthetic and feel about...

"1000 Chairs" by Charlotte Fiell and Peter Fiell

Hardly a week goes by without us highlighting a classic chair design, but still we are probably quite some way off having collected a thousand, which is, unsurprisingly, the number of chairs featured in the Taschen book “1000 Chairs”. The...

Magazine covers from the 1930s

These are magazine covers I scanned recently, from Taschen's "All-American Ads of the 30s" . Isn't it amazing that there doesn't appear to exist online a comprehensive history of vintage magazines, telling you basic things, like "This magazine existed from date such to date such", etc? Theatre Magazine , Miriam Hopkins , 1930s. Click image for 459 x 596 size. 9 more covers under the cut. The New Movie...

One of the most beautiful properties featured in the book is this amazing home in Positano, Italy. This 18th century villa was renovated in 2004 by Lazzarini Pickering Architteti, an [...]

Vintage ad # 275

More gorgeous ads by Fred L. Packer. Some were scanned from Taschen's "All-American Ads of the 20s" and "All-American Ads 1900-1919" ; and some were found on the internet. I hesitate to call his style art deco or art nouveau, because it looks something inbetween. I'm not sure if the first, second, and last ads are really by Packer, but I included them, because they seem so much his type of drawing....

‘Hiroshige’s Edo: Masterful ukiyo-e woodblock prints of Tokyo in the mid-19th century’ is a new book from Taschen which contains the most gorgeous images. Marvelous Murad Cigarettes ads, scanned from Taschen's "All-American Ads 1900-1919" . They're not signed but, based on their style, I wonder if they may have been created by Fred L. Packer .
