Author: William H Rice IV Publisher: Packt Price: $44.99 (US) £27.99 (UK) The strapline for this books is "A complete guide to successful learning using Moodle 1.9" I'm uncomfortable with anything that is referred to as being 'complete' because I suspect few things are ever truly complete. I would also prefer to see it referred to as a guide to teaching using Moodle 1.9, because the book is firmly...

Packt Publishing have contacted me asking if I would be interested in authoring a book on LWUIT. Unfortunately, I am too busy at the moment so there’s an opportunity available for someone. Packt are looking for someone who preferably (but not compulsorily) has a knowledge of LWUIT. "If the author knows Java ME (Java mobile edition) and [...]

Jonathan Snook has written up a book review of a recent Packt Publishing book "CakePHP Application Development". The folks at Packt were kind enough to send me a copy and it turned out to be a fairly quick read. It's 300 pages of good starting knowledge. The book is targeted as an introduction to the framework and not meant as a definitive guide (to which the book would likely need to be three times...

The folks at Packt Publishing sent me a copy of Learning Website Development with Django by Ayman Hourieh. It’s a fairly thin book, weighing in at just 243 pages, but it it is a very good introduction to Django. Knowledge of Python is assumed, so if you need that information, you’ll need another book. Hourieh [...]

CakePHP has been around for awhile with the final 1.2 just around the corner. Despite that, we hadn't seen any books come out focused on the framework. Thankfully, not one but two books came out recently including CakePHP Application Development by Packt Publishing . The folks at Packt were kind enough to send me a copy and it turned out to be a fairly quick read. It's 300 pages of good starting knowledge....

Chris Hartjes has posted a review of one of the many PHP books that Packt Publishing has to offer - "CakePHP Application Development". A few weeks ago I was approached by Pakt Publishing and asked if I was interested in reviewing the recent CakePHP book 'CakePHP Application Development' by Ahsanul Bari and Anupom Syam. [...] Naturally, several books about the framework have been published in the past...

I spent the last days reading "Zenoss Core," a book from Packt, the UK based publisher that just announced the finalists of this year Open Source CMS Award, as reported also by one of the judges. The book has been written by Michael Badger, who is neither a Zenoss project member nor a Zenoss employee, but one of the many Zenoss community members. The author explains all, starting from installation...

Over the past few months I’ve had the book “WordPress Theme Design” on my desk ready to be reviewed (it’s another book from Packt publishing). I finally got to it earlier this week. You can read my review over at Amazon. I gave it 3 stars mainly because it wasn’t complete and lacked some of [...]

David Goodwin has posted a new book review of a PHP book offered by Packt Publishing (released Sept 22, 2007) - "PHP Web 2.0 Mashup Projects" by Shu-Wai Chow . Some time ago, Packt publishing sent me this book to review. Here it is, being somewhat overdue! He talks about the book's contents - the different chapters detailing the different services' APIs, the protocols that are used to talk to those...

On the PHPClasses.org website there's a new book review posted from Alexandre Altair de Melo about a new book from Packt Publishing - "PHP 5 CMS Framework Development" (by Martin Brampton ). Often developers have to think about several aspects of the architecture of a system for the Web, not necessarily restricted to requirements of the software. With this in mind the book "PHP 5 CMS - Framework Development"...

Elgg.org : Last year, when I was a judge in Packt’s awards , I was in the “social networking” category, which was odd since I didn’t know a thing about it. But I was still impressed with Elgg, and I voted for it. Flash forward a year, and I now a lot more about social networking. And Elgg has a new version out, and it’s even better than the last one. I set a demo with it for a client, and they (and...

2008 Open Source CMS Award Finalists : Packt announced the five finalists in each category for their open-source content management awards. There’s a lot of new faces in the “Most Promising” category, but, the only surprise nomination (to me, anyway) was TYPOlight in the “Overall” category. I’m a judge in the PHP category this year. Ken Guest has posted a book review today of an offering from Packt Publishing, Learning Facebook Application Development (by Hasin Hayder and Dr Mark Alexander Bain ). The book was published prior to Facebook's facelift but this doesn't really impact on the usefulness of the book. An overview of FBML, FQL, FBJS (a restricted subset of JavaScript and enforced for security reasons) are given along with...
