In case you didn’t hear, Microsoft announced a partnership with Netflix a week ago or so that’ll allow all Gold Xbox Live customers to stream Netflix’s 10,000+ movies (it’s actually 12,000 now) and TV shows. My initial reaction was that it’ll render the Netflix player obsolete for many. Although this may be true [...]

Section: Video , Content , Video Providers , Gadgets / Other , Household According to recent reports it looks like the Netflix player from Roku has almost hit the 100,000 unit sold milestone. The Netflix player was originally launched back in May of 2008 and was quickly sold out . Overall not a bad set of numbers, especially considering that Apple has sold just 400,000 AppleTV units in two full years....

Apparently Netflix is closing down their Red Envelope Entertainment division. It had invested in more than 100 films including “John Waters: This Filthy World,” “Sherry Baby,” and “The Giant Buddhas” (which we just saw and highly recommend.) Over 75 employees will lose their jobs because of the change. One of the reasons we dig Netflix is because they feature Indy films, so maybe we can deluge the...

Dan Rayburn submits: In an article I wrote for GigaOm.com Tuesday entitled " Content Offerings Only Reach a Few Million TVs ", I broke down of the number of non-PC related products like the XBOX 360, Roku, PS3, TiVo Series 3 and VUDU devices that are really capable of getting movies and other online video content. For my sales estimate of the Netflix player by Roku , (NFLX) I estimated that to date,...

Brier Dudley from the Seattle Times reports that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is buying Microsoft stock, Xbox deal must look sweet, Netflix boss buying Microsoft shares. The Roku-Netflix ( NSDQ: NFLX ) movie delivery box, which went out of stock soon after it was launched, has apparently sold close to 100K units since its launch in May, a seemingly high number considering its limited application and selection of Netflix movies for now..that number comes from Dan Rayburn on his blog . The price point of the box is $99 (and then Netflix movies are free for most of its...

One of the biggest beefs most folks have with NetFlix as an alternative to traditional forms of livingroom-based entertainment is that their on-demand selection is somewhat limited in nature (actually, recent Mashable commenter “Cody” remarked that “the online/stream selection was just plain miserable…”). Miserable might be an overstatement, but unfortunately dated and small is fairly accurate. Their...

NEW YORK - The movie-rental service Netflix Inc. is closing a base unit that finances independent movies, partly to avoid competing with Hollywood studios by which it partners for DVD and Internet distribution. The financial impact on the company will be small, and solely four out of about 400 employees are losing their jobs. But the offer for consideration could make it more difficult for smaller...

Hmmm. Besides providing viewers with an interesting walkthrough of the new Netflix streaming capabilities integrated in to Xbox Experience, Major Nelson drops the bomb that the partnership with Microsoft is an exclusive one (actually, the official PR said as much). In other words, Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 owners will never have the capability to [...] Visit eHomeUpgrade for more breaking news....

Dan Rayburn on The Business of Online Video reports that Roku has sold almost 100,000 Netflix Players. Since publication of the article, I've now learned that the accurate number of units sold is closer to 100,000. While it surprised me the number was that high, it does seem possible, as that would equal about 1% of Netflix's 8.2 million customers. Considering the price point ($99) and the fact that...

Netflix is closing Red Envelope Entertainment , its film purchasing and distribution arm, because "...the Red Envelope Entertainment unit competed with its main suppliers, Hollywood studios ." This is a big bummer, actually. Two of the movies that Red Envelope produced, Sherrybaby (a movie about an irresponsible mom on parole starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and Danny Trejo) and Confessions of a Superhero...
