'Your friend has paid us to kill you...' You know how it is - things are a bit quiet in the internet cafes of Lagos, people have sussed MARIAM ABACHA doesn't really have $30,000,000 (THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS) in gold bullion looted from Saddam Hussein's personal vault, and so it looks like it's time to up the email scam ante.…

Over on Boing Boing Gadgets, our Joel's discovered this fantastic, apocalyptic hand-cranked hard-drive erasifier: The hard drives come out of the cage in mid-write, heads skittering across platters. Doesn't matter. Can't bother with an overwrite now. Terabytes stacked on terabytes, all into the Fujitsu ME-P3M. The big old machine that Sarah had helped carry down here. Laughing at the hand crank, screwing...

This cropped up yesterday, but let's just say it's taken me that long to process the uber weirdness here. The LA Times posted some rather odd set photos from Crank 2: High Voltage that seem to depict a surreal sequence in which an exaggerated version of Chev Chelios, played by Jason Statham, and some other dude go at it amidst a gloomy landscape of tiny power lines - giving the characters a giant quality....

French researchers have given bar owners across the globe another reason to crank up the tunes: loud music causes people to drink beer faster. A study published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research found the average person drinks a glass of beer a full three minutes quicker when the music is loud. A team of researchers from the University of Southern Brittany spent three Saturday...

I enjoy two things: Crank calling Hillary Clinton at 3AM every morning, and 9 to 5 . The movie. From 1980-ish. Waaaay before I was born. (Hush up.) I've said it before (and I shall undoubtedly say it before again), I love me some 9 to 5 . LOVE IT! In my list of all time favorite movies, it is right up there with Pee Wee's Big Adventure and the movie that hasn't been made yet that I star in that wins...

I'm sure you're probably not as excited about this as I am, but things are starting to crank up at the CSA. The variety is getting broader, and the expectation of new foods is getting higher. And while they're not all that interesting, these posts do have a purpose. I'm trying to keep a record of what I get throughout the season to compare to future seasons. I am, after all, expecting the CSA to be...

The notion of functional ceramics usually brings tableware to mind, not furniture, but Jonathan Trotter uses industrial crank clay to press mould fully functional stools. The green one, above, is embossed with pattern taken from kitsch wallpaper; the one after the jump incorporates traditional leather upholstery buttons. Trotter also has a line of Victorian door accessories that includes laser-etched...

The problem with shooting a gun at someone is that you just can't control how fast the bullet is going. More than likely, it's going very fast and will seriously hurt or kill them. But geez, you didn't want that!...

I have listened to Jackie Blue by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils 45 times today. I have neglected various important tasks in my day to do this distraction…that is, dropping what I’m working on to walk over to the stereo and hit “repeat.” What I meant to do was write a post about weddings…something having to do with [...]

by Nilay Patel , posted Jul 22nd 2008 at 8:06PM ASUS must think that best way to make the Eee PC stand out in the overflowing netbook market is to crank out minor, uninteresting variants of the same models, because otherwise we're at a total loss to explain today's appearance of the Eee PC 1000HD. Yeah, that's the 1000HD, not the 1000H, which we've already seen. Ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is...
