Luc Besson is in denial. The 49-year-old French film potentate and master of pop cinema (see Nikita, Léon, The Big Blue) has made yet another peerless action classic in the Paris-set kidnap drama Taken. Written and produced by Besson, it stars Liam Neeson as a semi-retired CIA hatchet man who will stop at nothing to bring his missing daughter back home, and send her captors to hell. It is directed...

The last feature made about Joan of Arc in the 20th century is typical of the time. Cynical and based on pop psychology, The Messenger (1999) does a disservice to France's national heroine.

Say Luc Besson and Korea in the same sentence, and you’d be likely reminded of all the pathos surrounding Korean theater chains’ decision to torture Besson’s The Fifth Element to pieces (less minutes, more screenings!) back in the day, and the French director’s subsequent reaction. But this time it looks like they’re working together. President Kim Gwang-Deok of Odyssey Pictures just announced they...

I really wanted to love Luc Besson's Angel-A . So much so that my disappointment in it stung harder than any other film I can think of recently that let me down. Perhaps my expectations weren't fair as I must admit that I wanted so much to fall in love with this film in the way I did with Besson's past works like Subway and Leon …unfortunately that just isn't the case here for me. Angel-A is actually...

There used to be a time where I'd say that anything French filmmaker Luc Besson touched would be solid gold, but he has since then destroyed my impressions with that awful animated movie Arthur and the Invisibles. Oddly, it wasn't Luc Besson's fault at all, it was the studio's, who butchered it for an American [...]

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy , Deals I say, there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound well too. It was the beating of the old man's heart. Imagine how crazy the man would have been if the heart was actually a ticking clock. While we've had beating, tell-tale hearts, Variety reports that we're getting a new kind of loud heart,...
