Uncanny Birthday Suits

Celebrating cinematic folk, born on this day 11/23 . Get out your kazoos. Franco, Maxwell and Harpo. Half of the fun of building these posts is these completely nonsensical groupings! 1859 Billy the Kid , outlaw. I've always thought it a mystery as to exactly why people routinely idolize characters whom they would never want to meet in real life. Murderers, criminals, thieves, (especially gangsters)...

Investigation Reports 'Tyson' Not Extorted in Oscar Doc Controversy

I am not a person that seeks out many documentaries. I enjoy watching them whenever I do see them, but I don't hunt them down the way so many others do. So, when the Academy announced the 15 documentaries that made their short list for Oscar nomination consideration I didn't even think twice about dissecting [...]

James Toback Isn't Taking His Oscar Snub Well

In an interview with the New York Times , enigmatic director James Toback went to great lengths to assail not only the reputation of the committee that selects the shortlist for the Best Documentary award, but also the fairness of their selection process. “How is some tiny, dirty covert weirdly protective little group within the Academy going to be immune?,” he posed to Michael Cieply,...

Oscar Snubs? Extortion Plot? Do Tell!

Are members from the documentary branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences being paid to short list some films over others? That's what it sounds like director James Toback was alluding to when he spoke to the New York Times recently about how his buzzed-about documentary, Tyson , was left off the Academy's short list along with several other notable documentaries from the past year....

Michael Moore's Capitalism snubbed by Oscar longlist

However, hard-hitting eco-film The Cove and Agnès Varda's acclaimed The Beaches of Agnès are included in Academy's 15-strong longlist for best documentary Oscar Michael Moore has touted it as his boldest, most ambitious movie to date. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, however, appears to disagree. Previously seen as a frontrunner for next year's documentary Oscar, Capitalism:...

Same movie news, different movie blog

Seems like today, everyone’s talking about the same few news items. I’d hate to be left out. * Adding to the endless speculation over who will be cast as whom in “Spiderman 4,” Nikki Finke enters the more or less pointless but, I suppose, fun fray by naming Anne Hathaway as having been “approached” for a [...]

Academy Selects 15 Documentary Hopefuls to its Shortlist

The AMPAS has chosen 15 films from the qualifying 89 documentaries to its shortlist. The hopefuls, vying for a final spot in the Documentary Feature category of the 82nd Academy Awards, are listed below, but the list is not without a bit of controversy. Some prominent omissions include the acclaimed smash Anvil! The Story of Anvil, James Toback's Tyson, and, most notably, Michael Moore's Capitalism:...

Michael Moore, Anvil and Mike Tyson Left Off Oscar Short List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled their list of 15 films that will vie for the Best Documentary Academy Award Nomination. And while the list includes well-known titles such as Food, Inc. and The Cove, it is more surprising to look at some of the high profile docs that have not been included on the list, such as: Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story and James Toback's Mike...

Blu-ray Review: Two Girls and a Guy

Sometimes a movie is all about the setup, while for others, it's all about the execution. James Toback's 'Two Girls and a Guy' falls into the latter category. The set-up is this: two girls (Heather Graham...

Two Girls and a Guy

I never heard of TWO GIRLS AND A GUY until now, and after watching it I can honestly say it didn’t quite go down the way I thought it would. There’s definitely a relevant point of view here in regards to society’s lack of monogamy these days (no secret there), but this film more than stumbles along the way of trying to properly communicate this point of view (or any for that matter)....

Fantastic Mr. Fox

As the voice of Mr. Fox in the movie version of Roald Dahl's classic, George Clooney reprises his role as Danny Ocean, a wily schemer in good suits. Maybe that's why dioramas of his woodsy world adorn the windows of...
