Although documentaries have gained a fair bit of mainstream acceptance over the past decade, the average moviegoer is still highly unlikely to know or care about most of the films that are being released in the realm of non-fiction. And considering the kinds of docs typically recognized by the Academy Awards, it's easy to see why people might be turned off from the genre. Year after year, they seem...

However, hard-hitting eco-film The Cove and Agnès Varda's acclaimed The Beaches of Agnès are included in Academy's 15-strong longlist for best documentary Oscar Michael Moore has touted it as his boldest, most ambitious movie to date. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, however, appears to disagree. Previously seen as a frontrunner for next year's documentary Oscar, Capitalism:...

Agnes Varda and Chris Marker, the cat. Forgot to mention how much I enjoyed THE BEACHES OF AGNES, an autobiographical essay-film by Agnes Varda. An 18 Certificate warned us of “strong sexual imagery,” which turned out to be one shot of man with an erect penis. I almost asked for my money back, then remembered that [...]

I came away hoping that I will have as rich a life as Agnes (she is 80) and have adopted her as my style icon. The trailer is here . Do go...

She was associated with the French New Wave, and made her movie directing debut, La pointe-courte (1954), years before Francois Truffaut or Jean-Luc...
