We swear we didn't mean to throw a bucket of gas on the smoldering crash site where Werner Herzog collided a while back with Abel Ferrara, leaving the legendary auteurs fighting for their lives over...

In Director Interviews, Nick Dawson talks with Abel Ferrara on the release of Mary at the Anthology Film Archives. I'm a big fan of this film -- it's his best in years. (Although I haven't seen Go-Go Tales and the Chelsea Hotel doc yet.) Ferrara fans can also dip into the Filmmaker Archives with this interview with the director about R Xmas by Jeremiah Kipp. And, not on the Filmmaker site but

Abel Ferrara's Mary (2005), which tells the story of a movie star who is deeply affected by her performance of Mary Magdalene, played in European theatres a few years ago and has been available on DVD there for some time, too. But it has never been released in Ferrara's native New York -- until now. The New York Times has this to say, in a profile of the director that ran today: Mr. Ferrara’s 15th...

Battle of the sexagenarian indie auteurs! Photos: Getty Images The announcement of Werner Herzog's remake of 1992 naked–Harvey Keitel classic Bad Lieutenant definitely qualifies as one of the great WTF? moments in recent film news, especially because Abel Ferrara, director of the original film, seemed as surprised as the rest of us. At Cannes last month, Ferrara offered Herzog and his star, Nicolas...

“Did everybody see the film'” Abel Ferrara cried at the jump of the Cannes press conference for Chelsea on the Rocks , compulsively putting on and pulling off a pair of black wraparound sunglasses, sipping on a can of Budweiser. Several journalists coughed in response. Said Ferrara: “What is this, avian flu? Everybody cough, yeah. We got a Howard Hughes complex as it is.” The press conference as a...

"Hey, listen to me. I'm the boss, not Aunt Wendy. When it's your time to use the bathroom, you tell Aunt Wendy to get the fuck out of the bathroom! What are you, men or mice? She's hoggin' the bathroom - call me! Call me, and I'll throw her the fuck out!" -- The Lieutenant from Bad Lieutenant 1992 was a great year for Harvey Keitel. Reservoir Dogs and Bad Lieutenant were a double assault of major bad...

The continued lack of a proper trailer for Abel Ferrara’s Go Go Tales is, frankly, pretty baffling to me. You've got a cult director helming a film set in a strip club operated by Willem Dafoe and Bob Hoskins with Matthew Modine and Asia Argento in the cast, the film premiering as part of Cannes 2007. This is not a hard sell, people, all you need to do is put it out there and people will come but here...

If you are a follower of the works of director Abel Ferrara, and you saw Go Go Tales your only hint that he also directed the darker “King of New York” and “Bad Lieutenant” would be the controversy that his unconventional film making style garners. read more
