Really amazed by this expo, very well organised, and so many animation superstars walking around here! I was sorry I had'nt brought any of the comics with me, and then I met Niklas Anderson master layout dude who worked with us on Kells and he said he saw them for sale in the expo. I walked around and there was actually a big pile of both volumes at Stuart Ngs table. Amazing! He got them in France....
First a few quick snaps: Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells) and Donachala Daly Lou Romano (center) gives a young artist some advice. Craig McCracken (right) and his wife Lauren Faust (left) look over some of their notes. For a Friday afternoon of an inaugural event it was pretty spectacular. This was supposed to be the “slow day”, but [...]
Every year, the BBC airs a Children In Need charity fundraiser. This year they produced a stop motion music video which, for cartoon buffs in the UK, is a pretty big deal. It collects around 120 characters (approximately) from children’s shows from the last 30 (or more) years. It features classics like Paddington Bear, the [...]
I got into a discussion with a friend last week about the horrible theatrical cartoons of the 1960s. I call them “drive-in cartoons” because I see no use for them except to be filler at drive-in theaters, allowing time for kids to get concessions or for teenagers to make-out before the main feature. Almost all [...]
The future looks golden (like a sunny summer day) for Partly Cloudy ! Of course, I’m making a reference to a certain golden statuette that Pixar’s latest theatrical short will possibly be in the running for. Yup, that means the Best Animated Short Film Oscar category has been shortlisted and, as usual, Pixar is being considered. Partly Cloudy is among nine other short ‘toons which...

Pressure to complete the project by the Dec. 18 release date has risen to the point where crews are working "24-8"—that is, eight days a week—said...
Cars Toons is back with an intergalactic bang! Unidentified Flying Mater , part of Mater’s Tall Tales, follows the rusty-but-trusty tow truck as he encounters and quickly befriends a UFO named Mator. Radiator Springs’ go-to-guy rushes to the rescue when his space friend is captured by the military! As usual, Lightning McQueen finds Mater’s story a little hard to believe. Catch the...
Of course, motion capture has been around since the days of Out of the Ink Well, Snow White and Gulliver's Travels . Then it was called "rotoscope." Now it's digitized and goes by the handle "Mo Cap." Whatever the name, SAG looks to be discussing the procedure with movie producers in 2011. ... [T]he Screen Actors Guild is investigating how thesps perform the work -- a signal the...
It’s the time again when critics start compiling their “best of” lists for the decade. We’ll probably do a few ourselves, though the roundup of American TV animation is looking fairly barren from this vantage point. How many shows debuted in the past decade that were entertaining, made a lasting impact on their audience, and [...]
I just found out that as part of its monthly Monday Nights With Oscar film series in New York, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present eight 35mm UPA shorts, including Academy Award winners Gerald McBoing Boing (1950) and Mister Magoo’s Puddle Jumper (1956), in a program selected and hosted by Oscar-winning [...]
