Through the kindness of a friend, I too have now read Wes Anderson's The Rosenthaler Suite, a Universal/Imagine-funded adaptation of Patrice Leconte's My Best Friend (Mon Meilleur Ami), theatrically released in '06 and issued on DVD on 10.16.07. Or most of it, I mean. Wes has thoroughly Wessified the Leconte piece and made it his own. And it's a very enjoyable read. I could see this movie in my head...
Nov. 12th: Celebrating the birthdays of the filmic and famous 1840 Auguste Rodin , sculptor... still waiting on a biopic though Gerard Depardieu did play him in Camille Claudel (1988). In his honor today, get naked and strike a memorable pose. 1922 Kim Hunter , "STELLA A A !" 1929 Grace Kelly , princess 1942 Wallace Shawn , "inconceivable!" 1945 Neil Young , musician 1947 Patrice...
Well, here it is, the first of sure-to-be-many end of the year/decade lists on the blog. As most of the DVD releases for 2009 have already been announced, I figured it safe to cross the Region 1, US DVD premieres off the list early. All of the DVDs below are for films that were previously unavailable on DVD in the States (though it's possible one or two might have had an unofficial bootleg circulating)....
The upcoming issue of The Comics Journal has a fantastic story about the greatest comics anthology that never was. Issue #299 of The Comics Journal (in-stores August 2009, premiering at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con) unearths a long-lost treasure: Way back in 1970, satirist/editor Michel Choquette conceived a mammoth anthology of new comics from all over the world by just about every cartoonist imaginable...

Recommended The Movie: The Perfume of Yvonne is a burst of nostalgia, sexual ecstasy, young love, longing and uncertainty, bottled into celluloid by director Patrice Leconte. Above all else, the film succeeds in creating the feel of memories, of a magic, glorified, fleeting period in a young man's life. Whether it ends in a satisfying way, whether the audience or the characters learn what they need...
Just in case you thought there might be some end in sight to the 3-D wave of animation (and eventually, I fear, nearly everything else), there was an odd story this morning that shows just how much it's taken over just about the entire world. It seems that even Frenchies like Patrice Leconte, director of one of my favorite froggy mind-benders in "The Man on the Train" and many other flicks,...

As a young boy, the hero in Patrice Leconte’s The Hairdresser’s Husband dashes out to the barbershop at every opportunity, no matter whether his hair is already cropped to a trim quarter-inch. For him, the place carries sensual associations that are endlessly intoxicating, from the subtle aura of shampoo and perfume to the lusty power of the generously endowed women wielding the scissors....
LOS ANGELES, CA (MARKET WIRE) Severin Films announces the April 28th premieres of "THE HAIRDRESSER'S HUSBAND" and "THE PERFUME OF YVONNE" from acclaimed French writer/director Patrice Leconte, best known for such international hits as "THE GIRL ON THE BRIDGE," "THE WIDOW OF SAINT PIERRE," the Oscar(R) nominated "RIDICULE," and his recent triumph "THE...
Film Reviews: With slim chances of winning any congeniality prize, and even less of a shot at a runner-up award for sense of humor, pageant comedy "Beauties at War" is a throwaway effort from vet French helmer Patrice Leconte.
I'm still waiting for that big 2009 DVD announcement to cream my shorts, but until then, here are some recently announced titles (I'm still working out how to properly format these updates). Severin has re-announced Patrice Leconte's The Hairdresser's Husband ( Le Mari de la coiffeuse ) and The Perfume of Yvonne ( Le Parfum d'Yvonne ) for 28 April. In other Ryko news, three skin flicks will be available...
By my count, 44 titles were scratched off the M.I.A. for DVD list I made last year. A few were announced and then swiftly canceled (Ken Russell's The Devils , Patrice Leconte's The Hairdresser's Husband and The Perfume of Yvonne ) and others (like Marguerite Duras' Nathalie Granger , the Taviani brothers' Kaos , Sidney Lumet's Daniel , André Téchiné's Hotel America ) were curiously...
