Pirate Radio (2009) - Movie Review

Written & Directed by: Richard CurtisStarring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Sturridge, Rhys Ifans, Chris O'Dowd, Nick Frost, Katherine Parkinson, Jack Davenport My Advice: Matinee. It's 1966. And apparently you can't get rock on British radio. Well, not the normal radio stations. While the government has an apparent stranglehold on the [...]

CINEMA: Rock The Boat

BY JAMIE DAVIS Pirate Radio is basically a coming of age story for young Carl (Tom Sturridge), who is sent to supposedly get on the straight and narrow by living on board his aging hipster godfather’s pirate radio ship anchored off the shore of Britain some time in the mid-1960s. It’s also a story of [...]

Pirate Radio

Went to see this movie this evening with my teens. Yes, it's rated R (or "Arrrrr", if you prefer), due to excessive use of the F-bomb, and for references to sex and drugs. Because it is a movie about off-shore rock-and-roll stations, and nothing goes better with rock 'n' roll than sex and drugs. At least when the movie is set in 1966. Truly, it was nothing my kids couldn't see, but I leave...

Pirate Radio

I don’t think I’ve laughed so much at any movie in a theater as I did at Pirate Radio. (Known as The Boat That Rocked in its original UK release.) Like Richard Curtis’ other feature as writer/director, Love Actually, it’s a sprawling story with a variety of goofy character bits, an ensemble comedy composed of [...]

Pirate Radio (R) (2009)

The year was 1966 and the U.S. was reeling from the British Invasion of rock music that was pouring from transistor radios.Unfortunately for music fans abroad, the rock and roll music of Great Britain was not at all popular with the British government. Banned from the nation’s airwaves, pirate radio stations popped up in international waters on [...]
