Film and TV director made famous by his 'Gidget' surf movies Despite a long and varied career, in which he made several excellent films noirs, westerns, thrillers and war dramas, and a fair number of superior television movies, it was the wry fate of the film and television director Paul Wendkos, who has died of a lung infection aged 87, that his death was announced widely with the words "Gidget...

I just learned, via Peter Nellhaus , of the passing of one of America's most obscure-but-talented directors, Paul Wendkos. Wendkos would be far better known today if his first film, the great low-budget noir, The Burglar (1956), were more readily available. The Burglar , an unabashedly arty film based on the David Goodis novel of the same name, starred Dan Duryea in the title role, and Jayne Mansfield...

Gamling : the dizzying high of being ‘on a role’; the success-drawn floozies; the booze; the soul-harrowing misery that is crawling about on your hands and knees for 2 ps to put into one of the 2p pusher-machines; the booze; the feeling that this time you really will 'turn over a new leaf' as you leave yet another dead hooker in a bin round the back of a motel. It’s undoubtedly a...

By Diane Morton Check out some movie reviews below. If you want to download these movies do some searches to find what is out there. A good movie download search would use phrases such as "Download Movie Rental", "Movies Downloads", and "DVD Online Rental". The Fourth Man: Seductive blond hairdresser Soutendijk might not have murdered 3 of her husband's however absolutely...

What do the following dead people have in common: Albert Camus, Jackson Pollock, James Dean, Jayne Mansfield, General George Patton and Princesses Grace and Diana? Diana's inclusion in the list should be the killer clue that this is a roll call of celebrities who departed this life in a car crash, although road traffic accidents are a common-enough experience for us civilians, too – and not...

This may be a bit of a pointless film-grammar question, but hear me out. For a long time, the rule in most films was that if one scene happened at a later time than the previous one, the passage of time needed to be indicated by a dissolve. Particularly long time gaps (like the passage of a day) would be indicated by fade-outs. Cutting directly from one scene to another was only used as a gimmick,...

It's been a month since I did one of these Mad Men posts and I'm still on the first season. I mean that only in the sense of these posts. I'm right up to date on the actual Mad Men show, which wraps Season 3 up next weekend. I hate to see it go but at least I'll catch up on the blog with the movie references. (Find the silver lining!) 1.11 "Indian Summer" Rachel Menken ( Maggie Siff ) has...

I could get a better-quality version of this picture if I bought it off Ebay, but I'm not a very good memorabilia-buyer. Still, this promotional still from Artists and Models appears to be the only one from the film that features the director, Frank Tashlin. He's talking to Anita Ekberg, in one of only three scenes she has in the movie. And the other two times she appears, I originally wasn't aware...
