Jack Benny and Friends From Life

From the LIFE archives, here's Jack Benny and a few close personal friends. I recognize Van Johnson and Paul Douglas along with Dennis Day, Mel Blanc , Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris and Don Wilson. Might be the Sportsmen Quartet in there, too, and maybe Phil's band (which wasn't really Phil's band exactly but that's another story.) Hard to estimate the date of the pic, however, as it seems to have...

Mel Blanc: Man of a Thousand Voices

Although you may have never seen Mel Blanc’s face, you’ve definitely heard his voice — he voiced hundreds of classic cartoon characters including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Speedy Gonzales, Barney Rubble, Foghorn Leghorn, and bunches more. Known as the “man of a thousand voices,” he actually claims roughly 400 voices in the video below [...]

Links: A Night At The Mic

by Lang Whitaker Just a quick post before we all bounce for the weekend… (I’m writing one-sentence paragraphs in order to avoid the dreaded “Related Posts” box on the left.) (Ryne put that box there to make sure I write longer posts.) (Jerk.) Anyway, on Wednesday night I had another stint doing color commentary on an NBA game, this time my Hawks here in NYC against the Knicks....

Well!

Soccer Dad points out similarities between Obama and Jack Benny . (Those of us who understand the reference liked Jack Benny a whole lot better than Obama!)

Obama Channels Jack Benny

Is anyone else reminded of the old Jack Benny routine when they read this:'Obama must choose - Israel or Iran' Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on the US to choose between Israel and Iran on Tuesday night, according to Iranian state media. Speaking in Istanbul at the 25th Session of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC) of the Organization of the Islamic...

Jack Benny and Mel Blanc-1974

The great Jack Benny and the equally great Mel Blanc worked together intermittently for more than thirty-five years. This TONIGHT SHOW appearance with Jack's number one fan (before Karen Hughes anyway) Johnny Carson from 1974 was probably their final appearance together It was certainly one of Jack's final TV appearances as he died at he end of that year. Ya gotta love YouTube.

Leaving Thrift

Writing in The Wilson Quarterly , Daniel Akst looks how how we moved away from a national culture of thrift. An excerpt: I’m talking here about real thrift, which for the most part involves not spending money. It’s not to be confused with the smug species of faux thrift that’s been in vogue for a while. You see it in shelter magazines and newspaper home sections, where rich people...

Happy Birthday, Kim

I’m not saying how old. But, for people who know, Jack Benny and Kim would be the same age. She is celebrating with her boys today.

The Guy That Says Yes. Obscure Simpsons Characters. Frank Nelson.

I wish the Simpsons would have more scenes featuring "The Guy Who Says Y-E-E-E-E-S?" You know how he does it..it's like, "YEEESSSSS?" Go ahead, lets hear your imitation... ...uh. What the hell was that? Well, at least you tried. Keep practicing though*. The character was based off of Frank Nelson. He was on the Jack Benny show. I never really saw The Jack Benny show except in clips...

Jack Benny

Jack Benny was born Benjamin Kubelsky in Chicago on Valentine’s Day, 1894. His parents lived in nearby Waukegan. Jack worked there as a violinist in the pit band of a local Vaudeville house and that was his beginning in show business. He toured working with a female pianist in an act known as "Salisbury and Kubelsky - From Grand Opera to Ragtime", but when concert violinist Jan Kubelik’s...
