I’ve been at a retreat and haven’t seen the news since Friday morning. I take it the polls say a majority of veep debate viewers who were polled favored Biden. I agree with Bill Curry: Why then did Palin take a drubbing in the polls? It may have to do with the very personality that brought [...]

Last night, Mrs. Lawhawk and I decided to make it a date night, and went to see a movie. Arriving at Garden State Plaza, there weren't many choices, but we decided upon Burn After Reading, a movie by the Coen brothers. There's no spoilers in here, so read away. I'll let you discover the plot and the twists for yourself. I'm a fan of the Coen Brothers' Raising Arizona, so I get their twisted

Last night I watched Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard (1950), with William Holden and Gloria Swanson (and a very young Jack Webb in a bit part). Excellent movie, with two things that leapt out at me. First was the bridge game that Norma Desmond plays with her old friends from the days of silent film. What was [...]

Let me preface this blog by saying I'm a Barack Obama supporter. That said, I'm absolutely amazed to see and read all the glowing reviews of Sarah Palin's performance in last night's debate. Simply because Sarah didn't have a brain...

Fox Run Sentry has the best grocery store bakery in the area. I know I’m not supposed to, but I have a fondness for bear claws which overcomes my dwindling good sense. Since the Cubs game wasn’t close, I did switch to several channels to watch some of the VP debate. HD does make everybody’s [...]

Forget Tina Fey. About twenty minutes into the double-dreadful performance that was last night's veep debate, I realized that Palin much more closely resembles another actress: Frances McDormand. Think about it: Four to eight years of Palin would be exactly like four to eight years of having Margie from Fargo in the White House. The against-all-reason chipperness and desperate optimism are the same,...

The Coen brothers' 1984 Texas noir remains one of the best indie films of the '80s for its wickedly funny take on infidelity, murder, misplaced trust, and mutual suspicion (to say nothing of the knife-impaled hand). This is their slightly tweaked 2000 version that is actually a tiny bit sh...

The most unexpected twist in the new Coen brothers movie, "Burn After Reading," isn't the ending. It's that the main characters of an espionage thriller set in Washington aren't senators, cops or even rascally reporters: They're trainers at a gym called Hardbodies. As played by Frances McDormand ...
