The Remains of the Day

Linda and I watched a great movie on Saturday night. Called ‘The Remains of the Day’, starring Anthony Hopkins, the movie centres on the life of the butler in Darlington Manor. I was struck by two things. First, there was not a single swear word or blasphemy in the whole movie. This was a refreshing change to almost everything else we see. Second, the butler’s loyalty to his master...

Film News (04/07/09)

It's such an empty week for news, I'm really struggling to fill a column. Really the whole of Hollywood must book the week before Independence day off and not bother with any press releases. So excuse me, if I'm making mountains out of molehills, or elevating the sort of story I'd usually ignore completely. Moneyball Steven Soderbergh's baseball flick was all set to start lensing last Monday when out...

Sarah Palin: WTF?

A bizarre and rambling resignation speech from Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Readers will know that I have been a fan of her since she hit the national stage last August. But her resignation speech yesterday really was weak. It was as if it had been written (it had been written, right') by Tina Fey. The excellent Toby Harnden hits the nail on the head , as ever. Palin's resignation statement was rather...

Djimon Hounsou – Hollywood’s Resident “African” Tackles Shakespeare With Julie Taymor

(CLICK TO ENLARGE) Julie Taymor is unquestionably one of the more imaginative and innovative artists working within studio system confines today. I haven’t loved everything she’s put her hands on, but her name attached to a project will always get my attention. I only just learned that Djimon Hounsou will be starring in her next project – [...]

MICHAEL MANN WEEK: PERSONAL FAVES: Manhunter

Posted as part of Radiator Heaven's Michael Mann Week While it's impossible to overstate the importance of 'Manhunter' in Michael Mann's filmography, something happened five years after its release that has forever left it overshadowed. As Tim Brayton acutely puts it in a recent Antagony & Ecstacy article , "Post-1991, there's a big elephant in the room whenever anyone wants to talk about...

Allen making romantic film in Paris

Word comes from Screen Daily that Woody Allen is set to make a new film in Paris. This comes as a result of this three-picture deal with Spanish company Mediapro which was signed in the wake of their great success with Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona last year. The Paris project will actually be his second [...]

Hell or heaven? What will you choose?

A few days/weeks ago we saw a movie featuring Alec Baldwin, Anthony Hopkins and Jennifer Love Hewitt – I cannot recall the name of the movie. In the movie Alec Baldwin is an unsuccessful, broke writer who sells his soul to the Devil (Hewitt) for 10 years of fame and success. He panics when he’s [...]

Legends of the Fall (1994) Review

Legends of the Fall (1994) This movie is a great character driven story, with a wonderful cast and their performances are fantastic! I think for a period piece, this is one of the better ones I’ve seen. The movie is set in the Rocky Mountains back in Montana, where a father and his boys are living [...]

New Rule: No Good Songs, No Best Song Oscar

Future Academy Awards may not include an Oscar for best original song, the New York Times reports. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has changed the rules for the category: Only songs that score reach 8.25 or better in its scoring system will be nominated. If only one song tops 8.25, it will compete against the next-best scorer. If no songs attain the score, no Oscar will be awarded.

Government

I've thought of this scene from " Legends of the Fall " recently. It is the modern day expression of Jefferson's warning that a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government strong enough to take everything you have. Anthony Hopkins is perfect for this role:
