I'm posting this hoping that some of you, faithful readers, might be interested in working with our Incubator software which we will release this week (July 21, 2008) as a beta trial. What that means is that we'll provide the software as a hosted instance and you can try it out and give us comments and feedback. Some of those comments and suggestions may make it into the final version. If you are interested,...

Clearly the topic is hot. Two recent articles address the issue of helping Europe in its efforts. One is in English and was published by the Science-Business Innovation Board. The full text follows. Even if I have some doubts, I agree overall. The other one is in French, was published in Le Monde and can [...]

The traditional view of projects in a matrixed organization is that the project manager draws all the required resources from the necessary departments to fully staff the project (figure 1). But really a more accurate depiction of the project is one that depicts the responsibility gaps (figure 2). In figure two, each of the departments represent a fixed area of responsibility and the dotted circle...

The more work I do with customers and innovators, the more evident it becomes - the number one driver for innovation success is a clear sponsor for an idea. Your team can have lots of ideas, many great ideas, a robust system for selection and evaluation, a Stage-Gate process, a significant innovation portfolio, idea campaigns and a culture that sustains innovation. Yet, at the end of the day, any idea...

In an interesting example of life imitating art, the rock band Rush is planning to release a revised single of their song Working Man. What makes this release interesting is that the song was originally released as part of an album that didn't sell all that well, but the song was picked up by the video game "Rock Band" and the producers requested a slightly different rendition to place in the video...

For a couple of different reasons, I’ve been reflecting on this question in recent days, and so I wanted to share the three most significant reasons why I blog: 1. To create a space where I can be provocative with a purpose– My role as a strategic advisor to associations is to help my clients think differently about the future, and to make leaders feel some discomfort with their current assumptions...

Jef Staes, of Belgium, has a neat little book out called My Organization is a Jungle. To my knowledge this book is the first attempt by anyone to apply a systematic framework to the politics of innovation. Since innovation is a social process it stands to reason that organizations who innovate, that is routinely create insanely great products, have a set of shared values that help foster innovation....

There is a crucial element of business that often gets overlooked: The So What? In business there are a lot of interesting things that happen in a day. Your expense report was rejected because it didn't have an itemized receipt. You find out that the MRP system doesn't list the whole BOM due to the way the item is purchased. And so on. These things happen and they are important and you take care of...
