In this morning's L.A. Times David Lazarus confides confusion that one of the country's most politically reactionary corporations, Wal-Mart, is taking a pro-health care reform stance. "It's not clear what the retailer's motives may be," he writes, "nor does it truly matter. Wal-Mart is to be commended for taking a stand-- something far too many businesses have been reluctant to do."...

It's not clear what the retailer's motives may be, nor does it truly matter. Wal-Mart is to be commended for taking a stand -- something far too many businesses have been reluctant to do. Whatever the company's motive, retail behemoth Wal-Mart Stores Inc. made healthcare reform significantly more likely last week by throwing its weight behind a requirement that all employers provide health coverage....

Some people believe Wal-mart supports universal healthcare because: Wal-Mart wants to change its image, Wal-Mart wants to make its voice heard in the process, or Wal-Mart is flummoxed by unpredictable health care costs. Megan McArdle believes that there is only one reason Wal-mart wants universal health care: profits. If all employers are mandated to provide health insurance, Walmart will have a significant...

There's nothing like Wal-Mart: cheap crap sold for cheaper prices. I'm not too proud. I like saving a buck and still filling my cupboards. I knew my visit today would be risky: the afternoon prior to a major holiday. Carts were piled high with chips, beer, charcoal briquets, and fireworks. But I had a few prescriptions to get, plus some puppy chow and a veggie tray for the neighbor's BBQ tomorrow....

By: Chuck Muth Muth’s Truths BYE-BYE WALMART I tend to be a rather loyal customer, especially when it comes to doing business with a company that shares my limited-government/free-market/anti-union philosophy. So I’ve been a steadfast Wal-Mart shopper for many, many years now, venturing into Target only if I couldn’t find what I was looking for at Wal-Mart [...]

Republic of the Insouciant The Big Whorehouse on the Potomac By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS A s Americans celebrate July 4, they can contemplate that the union of “free and independent states,” like the former British colonial power, has evolved into its final manifestation--a complete whore house. While Members of Parliament in London charge their expense accounts with every personal expenditure,...

Wal-Mart has recently released a letter supporting the idea that all employers be forced to include mandatory health coverage for workers. Think about this for a few seconds. In the past Wal-Mart has fought state measures that would force them to provide health benefits for their employees. So then they were fighting something quite similar to what they are now supporting. Was this some benevolent...

We're just got back from a trip to Wal-Mart (what could be more American) to buy some clothes for the Unknown Daughter (she's grown enough that her old bathing suit no longer fits). The Unknown Wife and Unknown Daughter tried on clothes, while I wheeled the Unknown Baby Boy around the store until he went to sleep. Not surprisingly, the large-screen flat-panel TVs did the trick (based on initial indications,...
