Libraries are Miscellaneous

With a wide range of ‘things’ happening in and around libraryland, including Library 101, Stephen Abram’s paper on open source (pdf), Mark Albertson’s opinion piece on the changing purpose of libraries, and Laurel Tarulli’s recognition that not everyone fully understands what it is that librarians do. It all leads me to think about the ongoing [...]

For the UK's best Modern Warfare 2 deal, head to the grocery store

Grocery stores aren't typically known for great video game deals -- we can't remember any notable supermarket game purchases since our local Albertson's cleared out its NES rentals. But Sainsbury supermarkets in the UK have an offer worth noting: the retailer has cut the price of Modern Warfare 2 to just £26 ($43.76), an amazing £29 off the regular price. Tesco is also offering a big price...

Family Fun at Incredible Pizza in Urbandale

Last Monday we loaded the family, invited cousins, aunts and uncles and grandparents and went to Incredible Pizza for an evening of food and fun. The first thing you notice when you walk into Incredible Pizza is how huge it is. It sits on the corner of 86th and Douglas where Albertson’s grocery store once was. [...]

New twist on propellar beanies

So help me, I so wanted to take this picture from the side, but given what this guy had on his head I was concerned about him launching some napalm he'd saved since 'nam. I took this picture downtown after work yesterday. He was not out of place. A fairly young homeless fellow was sitting just outside the Albertson's, perched on a recess of the building near the door. He had a yogi bear style hand...

"Risky" For Who, Exactly?

As we've followed the buildup to the present labor dispute between King Soopers, Safeway and Albertson's stores and their United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) employees, we've taken an interest in technological and other developments since the last big strike that might change the game. In particular, we've found the efforts of a local liberal advocacy group to inform consumers about alternative...

TVs at the Point of Sale Make no Sense

At our local Texaco stations, they have TVs at the pump. At our local Albertson's grocery store, they have TVs in the produce section and at the check out counter. They look like this. This makes no sense to me at all. The TV distracts you from all the goodies they have on display for impulse buyers right at the checkout stand. There's no time to peruse the magazines to pick one up with a TV blaring...
