Brett Steenbarger submits: ( click chart to enlarge ) We hear about "credit crisis" and "risk aversion", but I thought I would make those issues much more concrete for readers. This is not some volatile stock or sector, and it's not a bank. This is a chart of LQD, the iShares Investment Grade Corporate Bond Fund. Note that it's not a junk bond ETF; rather, its holdings are considered investment grade....

Don Dion submits: The iShares Cohen & Steers Realty ETF (ICF) offers a fairly straightforward and cautious approach to the notoriously volatile real estate sector, largely avoiding mortgage real estate investment trusts REITs and rarely straying far from the largest REITs of the commercial real estate world. That approach has yielded appealing results so far in 2008—a year in which the broader real...

Thomas Smicklas submits: As reported, during the unraveling of the worst of last week's financial crisis, investors were looking for safe havens. Certainly, precious metals will fit that category, but I believe that for many investors a healthy dose of iShares' Switzerland (EWL) may worth a look to cure high anxiety. While waiting to find out the sordid details of the new " permanent plan " to shore up the ailing mortgage market (seriously, that's what they're calling it), it's worth noting that the iShares Silver Trust (AMEX: SLV ) added a little to its inventory today. How this Black Sunday works itself out remains to be seen, but so far in this economic slowdown,...
