News from America that drinking and smoking apparently increase the risk of Alzheimers is published today . That's good news, then; the previous scare stories have all suggested we drinkers and smokers will drop dead long before we're old enough to get Alzheimer's. But what of the research published in Scientific American in 2003 that suggested that nicotine actually delays the onset of Alzheimer's?...

People who have more than two alcoholic drinks a day develop Alzheimer’s disease five years earlier than those who do not drink, a comprehensive study linking the condition to lifestyle has found.

You would think that the UK Government would be encouraging us to eat, drink and be merry, not warning us of the dangers of over-drinking, smoking, and doing no exercise. There'll be no money to pay either pensions or the NHS, so we might as well have a really great time, and go out with a bang early. I find it rather distasteful that they try to party-pooper us into a long old age on the one hand...
