Sunday Perusing

If you’re having a lazy Sunday afternoon, here’s some reading. Some of these links are a bit old; you may have read them already: Joan Acocella on San Francisco Ballet (she likes at least two of the same dancers as I, and gives a good overview on the company and reasoning behind its repertoire); Robert Gottlieb reviews [...]

Ballet should always be this exciting: San Francisco Ballet at New York City Center

( San Francisco Ballet in Christopher Wheeldon's Within the Golden Hour. ) I saw San Franciso Ballet several Saturdays ago (Oct 18), at the end of the company's tour to New York City, and the performance had me positively giddy afterwards. The work on the program was all work that I had seen the company dance before, but seeing the works with fresh eyes and getting absolutely wonderful performances...

Artist has ties to 'Tempest'

The storm has come full circle for Evelyn Cisneros-Legate. She danced the role of Miranda in the original 1980 version of Michael Smuin's "The Tempest" with Tom Ruud, who danced Ferdinand, in the San Francisco Ballet production.

Divine Deception

Large, portable metal and glass signage goes up every day in front of the San Francisco Opera House, advertising the operas currently playing in repertory. This is followed by the San Francisco Ballet's signage for "The Nutcracker" in December and its repertory season in the winter and spring. This month a new pair of posters has gone up flanking those for the opera's productions of "Idomeneo" and...

Guardian Angel, Chase Brock Experience, Three Movements, San Francisco Ballet, Cynthia Gregory, Doctor Atomic

(photo from ABT) Blah! I had a very strange dream last night in which this one basically told me in his own sweet way that I need to calm down and not stress over blogging like a mad fiend. I have no idea why Angel Corella was on my mind since, although my favorite ballet company [...]

Tomasson’s Rigor Anchors San Francisco Ballet

Within the Golden Hour ." title="The San Francisco Ballet performing Christopher Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour ." /> San Francisco Ballet is not only the oldest American ballet company (it was founded in 1933), but one of the strongest, as its recent 10-day season at City Center demonstrated yet again. Its artistic director is Helgi Tomasson, the Icelandic dancer trained in Denmark who became...

San Francisco Ballet a Must See!

I’m going to write more, but just wanted to tell people in New York, if you haven’t already, you should really try to see San Francisco Ballet before they leave town tomorrow. They’re at City Center, with three performances left: tonight (Friday), and tomorrow (Saturday) matinee and evening. Go here for tix, and here to [...]

Harris Theater Turns 5

Harris Theater for Music and Dance celebrated the opening night of their fifth anniversary season to great fanfare last week, hosting a gala on Thursday night in Millennium Park to kick off their week-long engagement with the San Francisco Ballet while raising nearly $1.4 million to benefit the theater . We absolutely love the Harris Theater. It’s a beautiful venue in a great location, and the 2008/2009...

Ligeti, Poulenc and Prokofiev at the Symphony

My favorite box-office person in the Civic Center, Meredith Clark (above), has set up shop in the lobby of Davies Symphony Hall and it was a joy as usual to see her on Sunday afternoon. It's too bad the San Francisco Ballet, where she worked for 17 years, has decided that the internet should be the only way people get tickets rather than providing a fully staffed box office. (Note to Ballet: It doesn't...

Lifetime Learners: Teacher Training, Dance Magazine

No matter your level of mastery, there is always something new to know about one's own body. Former San Francisco Ballet dancer, Augusta Moore, became interested in the Feldenkrais Method® as part of a larger investigation of anatomy and kinesiology. In “Finding Your Spine” (page 18), she talks about using Feldenkrais principles to help dancers achieve greater artistry.
