In 2006 I wrote a post detailing some acquisitions at SFMOMA. Among the SFMOMA curators with whom I spoke was Sandra Phillips, who heads up the museum's photography department. She told me this story. I've tried to interest magazines in it for years (maybe it would be a better book?), but because it's a season of New Topographics at LACMA and because of the recent launch of a George Eastman House...

It has been suggested (by Robert Adams) that Kierkegaard promulgates 3 main arguments against objective reasoning in religion: 1) The Approximation argument: Kierkegaard argues (as a Christian theist, recall) we cannot base our eternal happiness on objective reasoning about historical facts, since historical evidence never completely excludes the possibility of error. In relation to an infinite passionate...

No one disputes that the 1975 exhibition “New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape” was a landmark show. Attendance at the George Eastman House in Rochester, N.Y., wasn’t huge, and the presentation didn’t introduce any unknown talent. But the show...

I believe that historical accuracy and careful attention to the historical context are important to the philosophical as well as the historical value of work in the history of philosophy and, conversely, that philosophical argument and critique are important for historical understanding of philosophy. One reason for the philosophical importance of patient and careful attention to the actual meaning...

Apparently GM did not get the results it expected from its experimental venture of selling cars through eBay. The program was launched on August 11 amidst great fanfare and hype, but did not translate into increased sales for GM. Though the program was supposed to run till September 8, it was extended, but even the extension [...]

Putting a human on Mars might be easier than anyone thought. A flight to the Red Planet currently takes at least six months, which is why we send robots—the trip is boring, fuel costs are astronomical, and cosmic radiation is nobody's friend. But NASA engineer Robert Adams has a solution: the two-burn maneuver, an all-but-forgotten secret of orbital mechanics that could cut travel time in half....

I was asked to make a 75th birthday card for a lady who used to be a cook, has a good sense of humour and supports Blackburn Rovers FC. After establishing that Blackburn play in Royal Blue and White I decided that I would use this colour scheme for the card and incorporate an image of an elderly lady with a frying pan (Ethel & Murray stamps I think). Well after an unsatisfactory search through...

After suffering a mental block, I have decided on this card for my niece's husband. Its a vintage image from Robert Adams Vintage Transport CD. I inked up the edge of the card with "tea dye" distress ink and mat & layered the image onto mirri card and some light gold pearl card. The topper has just 1 layer of decoupage but it really doesn't need any more. It stands out so well. Hope you...

NEW YORK, NY.- In this exquisitely produced book Robert Adams revisits the classic collection of nocturnal landscapes that he began making in the mid-1970s near his former home in Longmont, Colorado. Originally published by Aperture in 1985 as Summer Nights, this new edition has been carefully re-edited and re-sequenced by the photographer, who has added thirty-nine previously unpublished images....
