I've never given much of a sense here of the books that arrive at Mumpsimus Central each day. Here, then, are some photos of most of the books that have been sent to us in the past two weeks (the only ones I know for sure are missing are advance copies of Thomas M. Disch's The Wall of America and Holly Phillips's The Engine's Child , both of which I immediately put on the to-be-read pile -- though...
Joan Campbell Tony Glenville writes: I joined Vogue Australia in the late 1990s as fashion director, and worked with Joan () from time to time. I remember two things about her clearly: her great kindness in welcoming a new member of the team, especially when she must have welcomed so many new people into the offices over the years; and her terrific ability to sum up a new restaurant in a few, very...
I was shocked to discover that the writer Thomas M Disch died towards the beginning of this month, and I hadn't heard. In the late seventies Disch was one of my favourites - especially his novel Camp Concentration - a book I would rave about to full boredom level with many of my friends at the time. Not only do I seem to be the last one on the block to discover he's died, but I only discover now that...
Thomas Disch made a significant contributions to the science-fiction genre. He published his first sci-fi in Amazing Stories and its companion magazine Fantastic in the early 1960s. He was a mainstay of the New Wave movement that soon after formed about the British magazine New Worlds.
With the recent death of Thomas M. Disch, some people may be looking to read some of his fiction (like me). The Sci Fiction archive has one of his stories, Descending, so you can at least get a taste. [Via...
We are made to be immortal, and yet we die. It’s horrible, it can’t be taken seriously. - Eugene Ionesco, found via Elizabeth Hand’s moving tribute the the late Thomas M. Disch
I do not recall my first encounter with the work of Thomas M Disch; which is strange, given that all his books are so very distinctive, not only from those of other writers but from one another as well. When I say "all his books", I mean only those that I have read, which is to say several volumes of science fiction and three of the satirical horror novels he produced from the mid-1980s onwards.
The death of the American writer Thomas M. Disch, by his own hand, on the Fourth of July, was the last act of a drama that had been unfolding in public for several years.
Sci-fi writer THOMAS M. DISCH has died after shooting himself in the head. The 68-year-old On Wings of Song author was found dead in his New York apartment on Saturday (05Jul08). A keen poet, book reviewer and children’s author, Disch’s major achievement was in science-fiction literature - his books On Wings of Song, Camp Concentration and 334 [...]
I first heard Disch 's name when I was a pre-teen computer geek and his text adventure game Amnesia came out. I didn't play it until years later, but I do remember reading about how the game had squeezed the whole of Manhattan onto a single 5 1/4" disk as the game's map, including subway and bus system. How? By making New York awfully empty. Most of the street intersections are completely barren, save...

Thomas M. Disch : An S.F. and Horror-writer who was a stalwart of the 60's New Wave/ New Worlds scene. Hugely underrated and unrecognised, but not by Kid Shirt.
Dead , apparently by suicide, on the 4th of July. I was going to do a phone interview with him later this month for his newest book, The Word of God . It's not so much a novel as a collection of short stories, with commentary by Disch, who, in the book, claimed to be God . I was looking forward to talking with him. Disch wrote a lot of essays and poetry. On the Internet, he's probably best known as...
