Chronic City

Jonathan Lethem is currently one of those young favorites of the East Coast literati crowd who, like Michael Chabon, was influenced early by genre fiction. And unlike Chabon, Lethem keeps a much tighter reign on this influence in his own works, although he did edit the popular Library of America reissues of Philip K. Dick. CHRONIC [...]

Challenges for 2010

I have been toying around with the idea of joining the GLBT reading challenge next year, but hadn't really made any sort of committment. Then, I was reading Eva's list and discovered that I owned several of those books! I read several GLBT books this year just for fun, so I don't think I will have any trouble with the challenge. A couple of the books I am reading right now could count for the challenge,...

Traci Lords is Deja Thoris in John Carter movie

Before you fall over from a heart attack, Traci Lords isn’t playing Deja Thoris in the upcoming Andrew Stanton-Michael Chabon John Carter of Mars movie, but rather the cheap “got it out first” Princess of Mars movie from Asylum. Don’t believe me? Here’s the trailer to prove it! While there’s absolutely no acting or story revealed in [...]

My (and only my) best movies of the decade: The 2000 edition

Though I will confess I swiped the idea of picking the best movies of the last decade from somewhere in my morning Web reading, I promise you these choices are all my own (and since, I believe, only one of them from the first year received a Best Picture nomination, they're clearly not anything approaching consensus picks.) The rules? Well, there aren't many. Simply that I limited it to 10 for each...

Argyleman !

Mark Newport is a visual artist who likes to work with knitting techniques, either during performances, or in finished pieces like these super-heroes winter outfits. I love the Argyleman costume. Be sure to check out Newport’s website, with more examples (including a quite convincing version of Michael Chabon’s Escapist costume) (via It’s Nice That, thanks to [...] Related posts:...

The Best Science Fiction of the Decade

This is the fifth time I’ve picked my favorite books of the preceding decade, and I cannot help but wonder how many more chances I will have to do so in the future? Twice more? Three times perhaps? Scary thoughts. Before I begin, here is a brief review of my selections from past decades: The 1960s: Best Novel : Lord of Light / Roger Zelazny Best Short Fiction : The Star Pit / Samuel R. Delany...

An essay is an act of imagination. It still takes quite as much art as fiction

Zadie SmithWhy do novelists write essays? Most publishers would rather have a novel. Bookshops don’t know where to put them. It’s a rare reader who seeks them out with any sense of urgency. Still, in recent months Jonathan Safran Foer, Margaret Drabble, Chinua Achebe and Michael Chabon, among others, have published essays, and so this [...]

Predicting the Next Hugo Award-Winning Novel

For the last two years I've voted in the Hugo Awards , yearly literary honors for science fiction and fantasy (but mostly science fiction). I skipped the best novel category because I hadn't read most of the works, which is no fun at all since that's the biggest award. So when the 2010 Hugos are decided next spring, I'd like to have completed enough of the nominated novels to make an informed vote....
