Though I will confess I swiped the idea of picking the best movies of the last decade from somewhere in my morning Web reading, I promise you these choices are all my own (and since, I believe, only one of them from the first year received a Best Picture nomination, they're clearly not anything approaching consensus picks.) The rules? Well, there aren't many. Simply that I limited it to 10 for each...
Mark Newport is a visual artist who likes to work with knitting techniques, either during performances, or in finished pieces like these super-heroes winter outfits. I love the Argyleman costume. Be sure to check out Newport’s website, with more examples (including a quite convincing version of Michael Chabon’s Escapist costume) (via It’s Nice That, thanks to [...] Related posts:...

This is the fifth time I’ve picked my favorite books of the preceding decade, and I cannot help but wonder how many more chances I will have to do so in the future? Twice more? Three times perhaps? Scary thoughts. Before I begin, here is a brief review of my selections from past decades: The 1960s: Best Novel : Lord of Light / Roger Zelazny Best Short Fiction : The Star Pit / Samuel R. Delany...
Zadie SmithWhy do novelists write essays? Most publishers would rather have a novel. Bookshops don’t know where to put them. It’s a rare reader who seeks them out with any sense of urgency. Still, in recent months Jonathan Safran Foer, Margaret Drabble, Chinua Achebe and Michael Chabon, among others, have published essays, and so this [...]

For the last two years I've voted in the Hugo Awards , yearly literary honors for science fiction and fantasy (but mostly science fiction). I skipped the best novel category because I hadn't read most of the works, which is no fun at all since that's the biggest award. So when the 2010 Hugos are decided next spring, I'd like to have completed enough of the nominated novels to make an informed vote....
Michael Chabon's celebrated science fiction and geeky pop culture, and his latest book Manhood For Amateurs is a love letter to fandom. So when we managed to ask him a few questions, we were excited to geek out about genres. More on Authors

Over at the Valve, Andrew Seal considers recent novels by men that have won critical acclaim in light of Nina Baym's "Melodramas of Beset Manhood." He emphasizes Baym's focus on the critics' obsession with this theme. He concludes: it seems to me that the literary critical project of reading American fiction according to this American myth still sets the table for what we will be served as...

Dark Horse has finally released a softcover edition of Brian K. Vaughan’s The Escapists this week. The book, which is based on characters and concepts introduced in Michael Chabon’s New York Times-bestselling novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and serves more as a sequel to that book than a tie-in to Dark Horse’s [...]
I've finished the challenge. Since 42 is the perfect number for this challenge I won't add any extras to my list. I will be back when the next challenge launches in December. I had loads of fun doing the 42 Challenge. It ended up being one of my favorites. My completed list is: The Perfect Infestation by Carol Emshwiller Seafarer's Blood by Albert E. Cowdrey Dance of Shadows by Fred Chappell All in...
(In the "trying to catch up posting about events" category) A couple of weeks ago maegwynn and I were out to dinner in Durham and I noticed a flyer: Having the midday free the next day I went and sat in. Eleven people attended, which I considered pretty good for a midday event with limited publicity. Attendees ranged from literature professors at one or another university embedded deeply...
