I can't tell you how much I adore Jane Austen novels. I'm in the thick of Northanger Abbey, and it's a total delight--full of wit and charm. What stands out in this one, compared to other two books of hers that I've read, is that the author herself seems to step into the pages, clearly marking herself as the storyteller and indulging her own voice--as in one early scene, when our heroine Catherine...

When an article of mine looking at the role of Africa, Caribbean and South Asian troops in the British army during the two World Wars was published on Remembrance Sunday, some people criticised me for “re-writing history in favour of the BME community. So I thought I’d see what the BNP had to say on the subject, by way of comparison. To be totally honest, I hoped to find ammunition for...

I've been having a lovely time on my blog tour for the launch of Willoughby's Return. Here's an interview I had with Barbara from Everything Victorian and More. Thank you Barbara, I really enjoyed the interview! 1. What inspired you to write about the main character? I’ve always had a soft spot for Marianne Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility. She’s a heroine who wears her heart on her...

Inquiring readers, Over a week ago, Chris wrote a post about her blog and her personal journey in pursuing a course of study about Jane Austen, her novels, and the time she lived in. …before you see the movie Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. This is a fantastic (and fantastical) novel by Susanna Clarke that, handled rightly, will make a wonderful film(s). The novel is something like Jane Austen writing the Harry Potter series – lots of magic and Britishness. The copious footnotes (yes, this novel is heavily footnoted) are [...]

Last June I posted a preview of Darcy’s Hunger, a new Pride and Prejudice retelling of Jane Austen’s famous love story with a vampire theme. Since then, the book has gone through a ‘turning’ so to speak with a new cover, an earlier release date of October 1st, 2009 and complete name change to Vampire [...]

I found these Howth engravings by W.H. Bartlett on eBay (from this excellent seller). Perhaps you'll recognize the images from some of my shots of Ireland? Though it must be said: Bartlett was a big fat exaggerator. Just check out how he rendered Lambay Island in the background (positively alpine!) Or Ireland's Eye, in the middle, more like some epic Tolkien stronghold, than the wee island it is....
