The new novel superficially resembles Dennis Lehane's brilliant novel "Mystic River" (2001), in that both explore the lifelong consequences of one brief moment of childhood violence. But "Mystic River" is a savage book. Pelecanos tells a gentler story, his view of human nature more hopeful.
