Today's Star “ I was going to bed and then I ran across this sentence in "Atlas Shrugged." I got up to come back here and write it down. “ When men reduce their virtues to the approximate, then evil acquires the force of an absolute, when loyalty to an unyielding purpose is dropped by the virtuous, it's picked up by scoundrels--and you get the indecent spectacle of a cringing, bargaining, traitorous...

The title of Neal Stephenson's latest work of speculative fiction, "Anathem," struck me as an unfortunate one, at least on first (and second) glance, for three reasons: it looks like a typo for "Anthem"; we can't be entirely sure how to pronounce it; and most of us have no idea what it means. Still, it's [...].

JS still isn't convinced that government shouldn't attempt to legislate away the business cycle: I come at this as a liberal Democrat, so full disclosure right away. But let me ask you if you have considered that Ayn Rand style-libertarian economic policies have their limits as well. "Free markets" work in theory efficiently when every participant in the market has the same bargaining power and the...

When it comes to legendary comic book artist Steve Ditko, there are two paths of interest in his story. One is obvious — as the co-creator of Spider-Man who wrote and drew the first few years of the character’s existence, his skill as an great innovator in the comic book form is of great importance. There [...]

The Audio Books site is offering punters a free Ayn Rand audio book . How cool is that! Choose one of either Philosophy: Who Needs It? , The Virtue of Selfishness , or Atlas Shrugged, which would be a very long listen indeed -- although as this YouTube presentation using the Atlas audio book indicates, a damn good listen. Just the sort of thing you'd want to listen to while touring the country by Winnebago...

As was destined, the House of Representatives approved the bailout package yesterday. Ayn Rand's rant from Anthem comes to mind: The word "We" is as lime poured over men, which sets and hardens to stone, and crushes all beneath it, and that which is white and that which is black are lost equally in the grey of it. It is the word by which the depraved steal the virtue of the good, by which the weak...

It’s October 2008, and that is significant for two reasons. Firstly, it marks exactly 12 months since this time last year, and secondly, it marks almost one year on from when I first started to study Objectivism, the philosophy of Ayn Rand. Objectivism has many critics. Why? I will offer my personal opinions on that later. Firstly, [...]

In the aftermath of this financial catastrophe , as we sort out causes and assign blame, with experts offering various solutions -- More regulation! Less complex financial instruments! -- let's not lose sight of the most...

I posted yesterday a link to one site set up to ensure sure you're armed with the necessary intellectual ammunition to understand and appreciate the cause of the present economic turmoil, the cure, and the means by which it can be prevented from happening again. The Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights' new Web page defends a very different view from the interventionist mainstream—that the actual...
