cured

The Durham 'Lumiere' light festival was this weekend, and I was really rather taken by these pieces by Tim Etchells, they're kinda sad and surprisingly intimate. Tucked away in shop windows and odd spots around the city. They remind me a little bit of the Boxie slogans, or something similar... Tim Etchells They also reminded me a little of this Ugo Rondinone piece which I saw in Paris a few years back,...

Review - Animation Festival

Last Wednesday I went on the trip to the Animation Festival at the National Media Museum in Bradford. Although I’m doing New Media, I thought the festival would still be very interesting to see. We had three showings throughout the day, all showing animations from students and professionals. One of the ones I really liked was ‘Lettin Go’ – directed by Malika Whitaker (France)...

WFFBKK '09: Capsule reviews part 3

Short Wave Program 2 This is a collection of seven shorts of differing styles from various countries. Autosuggestion by Vasilis Siafakas and Chrysa Kalfi (Greece) -- I enjoyed the surrealistic art installations and performance-art pieces that were visions for a man who lives alone in an abandoned house in the woods. Is he a ghost, or are the "others" the ghosts? Home by Filippi Francesco...

Review: Not Niigata by Andrew Phelps

Having just finished reading Colin Thubron's In Siberia I'm wondering whether there is an equivalent of travel writing in photography. A travel writer will usually not be willing (or able) to spend the time it might take to become familiar with a place. Instead, s/he will create the essence of the writing out of fleeting, chance moments and encounters - this is what makes travel writing such a hard...

40 Years of Sesame Street

As people who visit this site frequently know, I'm a cinephile as well as a leftist, which is why I periodically review films from an aesthetic, sociological and ideological perspective. I purposefully select provocative movies that prompt us to examine our relationship to the world around us, and the prospects for transforming it. For me, film was the preeminent art form of the 20th Century in this...
