This afternoon, the Metropolitan Opera kicks off the second season of its wildly successful live high-definition simulcasts into movie theaters. The opening presentation of the Met's 2007-08 "Live in HD" series is Gounod's Roméo et Juliette , starring Roberto Alagna and Anna Netrebko and conducted by Plácido Domingo. Placido Domingo has canceled his Jan. 4 appearance at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise. The celebrated Spanish tenor, who is currently conducting Gounod's Romeo et Juliette at the Metropolitan Opera, was forced to cancel due to the BankAtlantic Center's failure to provide a facility to rehearse the orchestra, said Edgar Vincent, Domingo's representative.

This time last year, the Metropolitan Opera's foray into high-def simulcasts in movie theaters across the country was a quixotic experiment. Now, the second simulcast season, opening tomorrow with an all-star performance of Gounod's Romeo et Juliette, feels like an institution - with Washington Opera, La Scala and no doubt others catching on to the idea.

The tenor-go-round in the Metropolitan Opera's current revival of Gounod's Roméo et Juliette finally has all its painted horses in place (to extend a metaphor). The four December performances of the opera for which the role of Romeo had not been cast will be shared by Roberto Alagna and Joseph Kaiser, both of whom have sung the part at the Met this fall.
